Is this normal for a ear infection
On Thursday DC had the beginning of an ear infection and slight fever. So the Dr. gave an oral antibiotic.
Fri. the fever broke, but he has been pooping like crazy. I called the dr. again and she said it was because all the good bacteria was killed by the antibiotic, so he is getting diarrhea.
Is it normal for a baby to poop like that? He had about 10 poopy diapers today. It's usually just a squirt but still - he is so little.
He is acting fine - but I'm still worried. I'm trying to nurse more because he must be losing fluids.
Any experiences with the effects of an antibiotic?

I've not experienced that-but I would do a double check with the doctor just to make sure he understands what you are telling him. If he heard you right, and you DCs temperament is good, than I would let it go another day or so.

She said to stop the antibiotic for today - but continue it so he gets the full 10 doses.

Sounds like the meds are bothering his stomach.

yes, diarrhea is a side effect of the antibiotic, just keep him hydrated and he will be fine

Re: Is this normal for a ear infection
My DD had TONS of ear infections and the meds always gave her really bad diarhea and rashes. Unfortunately its totally normal - its because of the meds. I don't know how old your DS is but like your ped said the antibotic is killing all the good bacteria so you need to give him some. It's called probiotics / acidophilus - its in yogurt. SO if your DS eats yogurt give him lots (NOT at the same time as the meds, rather inbetween doses.) If your DS doesn't eat yogurt you can buy acidophilus in the store (I used to get mine at Mrs. Greens natural market.) Its a capsule and you can open it and pour it into his bottle (I was told to give it to DD twice a day, again not at the same time as the meds.) One of the more popular brands is culturelle.
I gave it to DD at the recommendation of my ped at 4 months and still do it today at 2 years old when she's on antibotics. Totally helps.
Hope he feels better!!!
Just so you know this is great for adults too!!!

Thanks everyone - the Dr did say that about the yogurt too. We only tried yogurt once or twice. I will give it to him tomorrow.
