Death in family (not mine) - what to send?

My brother's very new girlfriend's grandmother just passed away. She still lives at home with her parents. I want to let her know we are thinking of them and wanted to send them food. I mentioned it to my brother and he said they are Jewish. I asked if they were Kosher, and he wasn't sure. He knows his GF isn't, but isn't sure if that's just her and the rest of her family is. I don't want to offend anyone trying to do the right thing. First, is it OK to send food? If so, just to be safe, what would be OK in case they do keep Kosher? I was also thinking maybe a gift certificate to a local restaurant? I just don't want to send something they can't use or offend anyone, just in case and Im not sure if food is acceptable? Any advice? They live in Huntington if that helps at all.

Death in family (not mine) - what to send?

Def send food to where they are sitting shivah which I'm assuming is the parents house. I would call bens deli in Woodbury and have them put together a platter and they can deliver it. The deli is kosher so either way you are fine.

Our call a nice bagel place in the area and do the same thing. Maybe some pastries. Or a cake.

It is customary to send food though.

Bens or bagel boss are both good ideas.

I wouldn't do Bens - it isn't glatt kosher, so if they do keep kosher it might not be "kosher enough" for them. Bagel boss is glatt, so that might be a better option.

Thanks, Bagel Boss sounds like a great idea!
