how do you make sure your kid doesn't get the shaft?

not by others, I don't care about that...but by me.

Sometimes I feel like I am getting him too much, then other times I feel like he won't be getting things till next year so go for it.

Okay, my bday is Dec 17, a WHOLE week before Xmas. One thing my parents did, which stunk for anyone who came into my life later on (friends, boyfriends, etc), they ALWAYS gave me seperate presents. Always. They did this b/c it wasn't MY fault I was born in Dec. I have had boyfriends, even DH try to "pull one over on me" and say "I'll get you one BIG gift" Um, no.

I am no help b/c I want to get DS everything (PS he's a May baby and only 7 mos) for XMas. I say, just make sure he knows this is BDay, this is XMas.

My son was born 12/12/06. We have decided to do a half birthday in June and also celebrate his actual birthday, this way the gifts are spread out. Some winter some summer.

I could write a dissertation on this topic since I was born on Dec.26th. My mom ALWAYS made my birthday special- from throwing me a huge party for all my friends when I was little to large dinner parties when I was older after cooking Christmas eve and Christmas Day dinners too. She was the last person to make me feel like I didn't have a special day- now others that is a different story. I broke up with many a man who didn't understand Christmas and Birthday require TWO gifts even though they are at the same time

So just make a big deal- its not so much about the gifts(we didn't have a lot of money growing up and I didn't get a lot), it about honoring the day and making it special.

OH, I did have a sweet sixteen and half party since I wanted it in the backyard. No one brought gifts since they thought it wasn't fair

I was born on December 15th

My parents gave me gifts for my birthday and a separate gifts for Christmas. However, if I wanted something BIG it would be a combined gift with something small to open on my Birthday and for Christmas. I always had birthday parties. HTH

Im a December Baby my (29th ) birthday is next Tuesday...My Mom used to just plan a birthday party for me a week before my birthday so that it wouldnt interfere to much with the holidays...

All my girls birthdays are in January and I actually used to feel bad that they got all their presents within a couple of weeks time..so I try and ask family to buy them gift cards so that they can get their "gift" later on in the year...at that time I have them call "grandma" and thank them for the gift that they bought with the gift card.

I'm a December baby (Dec. 10th) and I never felt slighted.

My mom always made me a cake and I got separate presents. There was no such thing as a combo bday/Christmas gift.

When I got older, it was actually cool, because if there was something I really wanted, I'd ask for it for my birthday and get it sooner. So I actually felt kind of lucky that I didn't have to wait til the end of the month.

I'm a December baby - my birthday is today actually I never got the shaft when I was younger but know I do sometimes, but that's ok bc I want more expensive things now!

My mom always made me a cake and I got separate presents.

actually....this year my dh gave me a bday halloween party so it would not happen. I spend my bday cooking for xmas eve or preparing for it every year...
just make a mental note tomake it special is all....

My sister is the 23rd...one year she threw herself a party on Nov 23rd, cake and balloons...guests my father thought she was insane.

I love the 1/2 b-day idea, mine is tomorrow actually....I just have to get Leo on board.

I'm a December baby (Friday is my birthday ) and I never really felt like I got shafted. Like most others in this thread, my parents always made it a big deal and got me distinct gifts, so that wasn't an issue.
I even like it now as an adult, because - for example - the other day I went shopping with my mom for a watch for my birthday, and the one I liked was more than my mom wanted to spend on my birthday, so I just had her make it my birthday AND Christmas gift! (and I know she'll get me other stuff, too, anyway ).

My nephew's birthday is Dec. 31st, and I know my mom has always made it a point that his birthday gifts be wrapped in BIRTHDAY paper and we always have a separate celebration for him.

ETA: It's also great because there's always specials and discounts at this time of year!

I'm 12/21 and my family always way over compensate so I don't feel like I'm getting the shaft. And my parents would make a big deal about how it was my birthday, so it really felt like my day, not just part of Christmas week.

I didn't have birthday parties as a kid, but that was b/c everyone went to visit grandparents since we were off from school that week and there was hardly anyone on base. The one year we tried only one kid came. If my mother had heard of 1/2 birthdays she would have done that.

You are sooooo right!
I am not buying Gilly Hannukah presents bc i paid a ton for her party, She has tons of gifts from her party, we are going away for New Years and then again in january. I cant see buying a HUGE amount of toys or clothes when she just got them. Maybe I will buy her a few small things just for tradition but nothing all out...we will save that for Disney.

Being that her birthday is so close to Christmas and she got a lot of gifts already, I am not buying her much this year.
When she gets older (and doesn't have a massive birthday party ) I am sure I will spoil the heck out of her each year!

I have to definitely start a Christmas club fund or something....company coming in for the holidays, so ontop of his party, I have to be holiday ready the following week.

DD was born on the 28th so only 3 days after christmas
I am going a little crazy on her gifts because her sisters cant wait for her to open birthday presents so everytime we shop one of them picks a toy for her and I dont have the heart to say no and like you said it will be an entire year until its time for presents so go for it

Growing up, I was never slighted by my mom, aside from gifts, I was always made to feel special on that day. I Looooove my bday, always got so excited for it, and still do...

Now that my DS shares my bday with me, I expect to take the backseat to the "attention" for that day. So NOT Fair!! Just kidding!!!

I will make the day special for him as well. Just as my mom did. When he gets a little older I will throw him a pool party for his bday at like a Saf-T-Swim type place since I always wanted a pool party growing up and could never have one. And one year I will throw him a pool party in my backyard in July. Kinda like a "Christmas in July" type thing only it will be a "Bday in July".

As far as gifts go, I do tend to overspend on him, but that I cant help. I will never do a "combo" gift though. I know the pain of that all too well...

As a December birthday I always made sure to tell people birthdays and holidays are 2 seperate events. I hated combined presents. As I get older I actually dont' mind the combined presents so much since I want more expensive things

I am the 20th I never got shafted...still don't My brother is the 26th and my mom is the 30th So within 10 days there are 3 birthday's and Christmas

My oldest DD is Dec12. We are actually have her bday party this saturday. I have always done a separate celebration for her birthday. I find I buy so much as far as gifts go, and I dont believe in combined gifts. Last year after she got everything I put away some of the toys that she seemed too young for and brought them out throught the year.

I was born December 30th and I never felt like i got the shaft present-wise. I have a problem now that i am older because no one wants to go out and do something big with me for my bd and then go out the next night for New Years!!
