Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
Just curious...do you have your carpet cleaned even though there has been some link between carpet cleaning and kawasaki disease?
We only have a area rugs downstairs and carpeting in the nursery and DS's room which I want to clean but now I am nervous too. From what I read it doesnt matter if you steam clean them with water or use carpet cleaning solution. At the same time, I feel like rugs are dirty and need to be cleaned occasionally b/c people walk on them with sheos and dirty feet.

There was a big thing about it when John Travolta's son died. He apparently came down with Kawasaki Disease (which is a respiratory virus) when he was almost 2. They tried to blame his death on this b/c they as scientologist's, dont acknowlegdge the diagnosis of autism (which is sometimes associated with seizures). They said their son contracted Kawasaki shortly after getting their rugs cleaned which they did often.
Here is a post from the Home board about this back in January when it happened: http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=381977&Highlight=carpet+cleaner
ETA: Here is a news article which explains the whole story, the disease and possible links: Did carpet cleaning kill John Travolta's son?
I personally dont think carpet cleaning or Kawasaki disease killed his son. I think he had a seizure (probably linked to his autism) and they are trying to point the finger elsewhere b/c like I said, Scientologists dont acknowledge Autism as a disorder/diagnosis.
I planned on cleaning all my carpets before the new baby gets here since he will be crawling around on them but now am nervuos. I didnt plan on using a cleaner either, just hot water in the vaccuum but apparently that poses a risk too

After all that i ended up ripping up the area rug we had because it just got way too nasty for me.
I have another area rug there now and am contemplating what to do before the new baby comes.
Your post made me go Hmmmmmm....i remember this dilema!
So, to answer your no, I haven't done anything...and I'm still in the same place with the new rug

This makes me so nervous now...I agree with what you said with Jett but the rest. Ugh..I NEED to get the carpets in the room cleaned.

Re: Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
We own a carpet cleaner and DH cleans our living room carpet every few months. I make sure he does a few rinses with water only once he's done.
We are getting a new rug for the living room before the new baby comes anyway. I don't want him all smushed on that old dirty rug (carpet cleaners don't get everything IMO)

I did a search for "Organic Carpet Cleaners" and this is one site I came up with...they give a few companies way down at the bottom...

Re: Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
My next door neighbor's son contacted kawasaki's after having the carpet cleaned. From what I understand, it didn't have to do with the cleaner, it had to do with stirring up mites or something like that....

Re: Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
Wow, thank you so much for those links. I did not know.
My MIL self cleans her carpets once a mth, I will be making sure she cools down with that. Also..she was going to lend me her machine so I could do mine but I think I rather them stay dirty after reading that.
I wonder how long a child should stay away from the area/rugs once it's done?

That's what I read too...it's not necessarily the cleaner, it has to do with all the crap in the carpet beocming airborne.
My area rugs are not huge. What if I took them outside and cleaned them? I guess I'm not doing the rugs in the kids rooms.

Re: Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
I think someone said on the home board that some steam cleaning companies did not use chemicals, just steam with nothing in it. You have to find steam cleaners that do though.

Diana, make sure it well ventilated after being installed. There are chemicals in new carpets too. It needs to be "aired out".

I guarantee that you can find studies that show that some people have gotten sick from carpets that haven't been cleaned, and from hardwood floors, and from tile floors, etc, etc.... there isn't a single thing on this planet that won't harm someone. We all still drive every day, and we all know that that is probably the most dangerous thing in the US. We also breathe everywhere, and that's extremely dangerous as well.
It's all about your comfort level, and I'm more comfortable cleaning the house (and removing known health issues), rather than worry about what could theoretically happen in that .00001% of DC that have an adverse reaction to something....

Re: Deep cleaning carpets and kids?
Chem-Dry is a little more expensive but they use hot seltzer to clean. They will take your area rugs out of the house to clean them if you prefer. I have used them with a baby around, an allergy prone dog and while pregnant without any issues.
