Dental Work while pregnant
Did anyone have to have dental work while they were pregnant? I have to have novicane (sp) and am not sure if I am allowed. My dentist also wants to take xrays, but I am not comfortable with that.

Re: Dental Work while pregnant
your dentist will probably want or need approval from your OB
My DH is a dentist and he swears its fine, xrays, anesthesia, etc, but most dentists require the approval from the OB to go forward just to be on the safe side

I had a cleaning and an exam, but the dentist said no x rays.

I had a root canal. They gave me a lighter form of novacaine (which they had me ok with my OB). And they had to do xrays as well. They covered me with 2 shields when they did them.

I was able to get treatment when I was PG with DS when I chipped a tooth. They used that other novacaine (I never remember what it is called) and did not do x-rays. My OB said it was fine.

Re: Dental Work while pregnant
The day before I found out I was PG, I had a major toothache.
This is what the OB told me.
If you have to, 2nd trimester is best. It's best to wait until you have the baby of course. But if it is an "emergency", then you do what you have to do. Again 2nd trimester is best.

Yes - I had a tooth extracted and an implant put in - double sheild for the xrays and yes - 2nd trimester is best. They used a special novicane...

I broke a tooth when I was 12 weeks pregnant. Just make sure that the novocain is epinephrine free. They also told me that x-rays were fine if they put 2 vests on but I still refused it. Call your ob, sometimes the dentist will want their ok.

Re: Dental Work while pregnant
Dental xrays are more radiation than reg. medical xrays. They havd one phase machines which give more exposure to the patient. If you are pregnant i would ask them if their was anyway of doing the procedure without xrays. If they do say you need and you feel it cant wait until the baby is born, I would ask to be shielded with more than one apron. I would also ask if they test their aprons often to make sure they are up to code (youll be surprised how this is overlooked and the apron isnt doing anything for the patient).
eta: also if in 1st trimester, radiation exposure can spotantously abort the baby. (dont want to scare you. Im an xray tech).

Re: Dental Work while pregnant
I was told to try to wait until the second trimester, if possible. And tell the dentist you are pg and talk to your ob beforehand.
I ended up having 3 emergency root canals while pg. It wasn't too bad.
