DH and I are so angry with the movers we hired!!!!! WWYD??? (really long, sorry) ***FINAL UPDATE 3:30pm!!!

Update 2:30pm: "John" wouldn't get on the phone so I spoke with someone else (too angry to ask for his name) and he wouldn't do anything for me! After listening to his bullsh*t for 10 minutes I was too upset to argue with him so my dad will be giving them a call shortly.

Final Update 3:30pm: My dad talked to them and got them down almost $500. Better than nothing! He faxed the new contract already so we have it in writing. Now we just hope that the delivery is smooth....

******************************

After talking and emailing with several moving companies, we decided to get a free on site estimate from this one company. Two guys came and they were extremely nice, spent time at the on site estimate, looked at everything, etc.

They estimated 500-550 cubic feet. Great, the price per cubic foot x 550 cubic feet = in our budget!

So the movers come wrap everything in blankets, tape everything up, shrinkwrap (all included) and they are there for 5 hours... they do a great job! We go out to see the truck and they measure the cubic feet... it's 900!!! WHAT?!

We call the guy who gave us the estimate (let's call him John) and he can't believe it... his words "i'm never that off". What are we supposed to do?! John and the movers talk and they decide to charge us for 800 cubic feet, but John wants to see the truck when they get there b/c he can't believe it. We didn't even have enough $$ for half of the deposit b/c we took out enough cash for half of 550 cubic feet! So we give the mover what we have for a deposit and off they go.

John calls me that evening and said he measured the truck himself and it is 850 cubic feet. He said it was his error and didn't realize how big our couch and bedroom furniture were.

What is the point of an ON SITE estimate then?!!!

John is supposed to call me today to "see what he can do".

They already have our stuff, we already gave them a deposit! He SHOULD give us the price for 550 cubic feet, but what do we do if he can't do anything for us? Do we settle for a smaller discount? Do we ask for our stuff back?

It's about 80% over what he estimated!! And it's costing us over $1,000 more than what he originally estimated. Chat Icon We went with movers and not a uhaul b/c it was going to be about the same price... so we thought.

WWYD?? Need some advice before he calls today. (IF he calls)

ETA: We didn't get a written estimate, it was verbal.

ETA2: It's an out of state move and they are storing our stuff for 2 weeks before delivery.

I'm sorry that happenedChat Icon moving can be sooo frutsrating.

I think its a tough situation because your first quote/estimate was verbal and not written. I still think though you can bargain as much as possible to see what he will do, stress that you have a lot of people you can refer him to (lie if that's not the case), etc. I wouldn't ask for the stuff back, just b/c by the time you get it, they unpack it, you find another company or uhaul, etc. -its worth the extra money over the aggravation.

Good luck, I hope it works out.

Re: DH and I are so angry with the movers we hired!!!!! WWYD??? (really long, sorry)

Movers play this game all the time, they know once they have your stuff they can change the price. I hope that he is an honest guy. Why don't you ask him to split the difference with you since he made the mask and you realize he can not eat all the cost on his own. So if he is over by 300 cubic feet you can pay for the 150 cubic feet and he should eat the cost of the other 150 cubic feet. ( And make sure to get this in writing)

That's what my dad said we should settle for. And I already have a fax number ready for him if he agrees to some kind of discount!!

Unfortunatley verbal estimates are not binding. I would complain as much as possible b/c legally they have every right to charge you full price.

Sorry, this guy is full of crap. If he did an onsite estimate, why didn't he MEASURE your couch and bedroom furniture? I would also offer to split the difference, but you are kind of stuck, since they have all your stuff already.

Good luck - you don't need this stress when you are moving Chat Icon

Re: DH and I are so angry with the movers we hired!!!!! WWYD??? (really long, sorry)

Sorry to say that this is not unusual - when I moved out to MI and back to NY when DH went to law school I had to play their game. I got a bunch of estimates and they all were quite different and they all swore they are NEVER wrong. Even a written estimate isn't enough I think if I remember correctly it has to be a binding estimate otherwise they can charge you either the difference or a certain amount over the amount quoted. There is a site somewhere that I read about your rights as a mover.

Our problem moving back to NY was we were quarenteed it would be here within say 5-7 days and I didn't get my furniture for for close to 20 days!!!!! So I had no furniture etc and they really don't do much of anything for you - what they cover is a joke. I will say that the best was when we got a phone call asking how our delivery went and we they were shocked when we said um we have no idea we STILL don't have our furniture.

Sorry but moving is a real hassel and they often seem shady IMO.

Wait... I would say you had a non binding estimate but even those have to be in writing - I would not have gone with someone who didn't put the estimate at least in writing.

Etd to add that I think interstate is based on weight not on cubic amount

Be careful. My mom and dad had a similar issue once and the moving company "lost" the marble top to an antique dining room table they got when we lived in England.

I agree! once they have your stuff, anything can happen. my friend had the same problem when she moved from Levit to Lake Grove many yrs ago. while en route to LG, they told her to pay up another $1K. she was SO PO'd so she gave them a check and then cancelled it. they came back to her house and dumped garbage all over her front lawn Chat Icon she took them to court but they never showed up. it's such a SLEAZY business! Good luck!! I hope it all works out

I was going to suggest that, but can she get her stuff back? She's going to be responsible for the 5 hours it took them to pack it, plus all of the packing supplies.

movers are such scam artists! the same thing happened to the people that sold their house to my parents. they were moving from east meadow to texas and the movers loaded everything on to their truck and then gave her the bill. they werent as suave as your guys...they basically told her "we have your stuff so you have to pay or we'll dispose of it". i felt so bad for them!

good luck with everything jessica! make sure you get all the facts with regard to the laws so you can give it to them good! Chat Icon

check out this site it might help to give you some sort of leverage. But you might want to wait til you have your stuff to make a fuss - they might just unload it at their warehouse until you pay and then they will also charge you storage feeshttp://www.protectyourmove.gov/about/mission/mission.htm

I would pay for the 5 hours- knowing that my stuff was safe and not with these people- I would not be able to sleep

who knows if they are ever going to deliver her stuff or pull one of those- pay us $3K once they get down to FL

I saw a 20/20 special about this once

Not sure how this applies without a written estimate though

You might want to call the DOT to see if they can help you
