dh and i wanted to warn ya's
we used a real estate Weichert and ever since we bought our house we been having problems which must of you know about! now we get our first statement for our mortage which is due in aug and we saw that they took money out of escrow on us which they were NOT allowed too due to the damages in our basement! never use their mortage guy get one from the outside and dont use their lawyer either because he does not do anything he seems like he is not helping us and believe me he will get sued if we dont get our money back. just wanted to share & vent thanks!

Our real estate tried to get us to use their mortage broker after telling them initially we had someone already. she even tried to "scare" us by saying we could lose the house to another bid. Well, I refused to give in to it and we still got the house.

In general I don't think I would use the lawyers recommended or used by the real estate company. It almost seems like a conflict of interest when it comes to situations like these.

I think its majorly ethically wrong for them to recommend anyone that is on their "team" 
If they do they should (have to?) offer 2 others for you to choose from as well, ie, 3 Lawyers and not 1 who may be in their pocket.
Our RE agent tried this too, suggesting her lawyer (her brother ), an engineer (are you kidding?) and a mortgage broker.
We got all our own people, she didn't seem happy but too bad,

i don't think it is ethically wrong
LOTS of wedding halls have their "recommended" florist and photographer and what not...
Sorry but i think if you do not do your own research then y ou are bound to get screwed....
i can't really say it is unethical though

I don't think it's unethical. When I refer people to clients (as a real estate agent) I do so because I know that they are competent people. I don't do it to get a kickback or as a way to ensure that the deal happens. When I am referring people I do it to make the buyers lives easier and couldn't care less if they used who I recommended. I work with a lot of first time homeowners who really don't know much about what the next steps are...I just try and help out and guide them.
As a buyer though - I would always call a few different people - whether it be lawyers, or inspectors - to see who I feel most comfortable with.
In your circumstance it totally sux that you are going through this and it does sound like you were taken advantage of.

well then you sound like someone that I would want to do business with, completely different from our agent -I won't even go into the details here, but this post brought back some bad memories.

well then you sound like someone that I would want to do business with, completely different from our agent -I won't even go into the details here, but this post brought back some bad memories.
Honestly - this is the problem and reason why real estate agents get a bad name. I like to think that I treat everyone as if they were a friend of mine. I don't like the slimey backstabbing people. Buying (or selling) a home is probably one of the biggest things you will ever do in your life and it makes me very angry when people take advantage like this.
