I didnt think it was possible for me to hug and kiss my dd more than i already do, until i read this.. I just wont put her down.. I cant imagine how you and your DH feel being soo close to this situation.

OMG! I was wondering that myself and it really upsets me. I am only reading this story on here. i think everyone should know. EVERYONE should keep an eye out for this baby...but most of NY are out at work not knowing. WHy is this not on the news???

That is horrible, how sad. That mom must have been feeling pretty weighed down. I live in Michigan and we have a law here that you can drop you baby at a hospital, police, fire, or church building, no questions asked. My dad is a trash man and he found the body of a baby once, he was sick for days and still, occaisionally has some horrific dreams about it, it was so sad to see him go through that. People must be feeling at the end of their rope to let this type of thing happen. I am so sad for that baby and for the mom...that she felt like she had no one to turn to.

That is a terrible story. It's one thing when you hear things like this on the news, but to know someone who is actually going through this is terrible
 to you and DH.

We have that law too!!!!! It always makes me so furious when people don't take advantage of this. But, you know, I guess if you are not thinking clearly...

He works on the upper east side for a bank. I have no idea where the mother lived - only that she worked with DH. I have no idea why this hasnt been covered yet - unless there isnt enough information to go on - or the baby has been found (hopefully safe and sound) Unfortunately, this kind of thing happens too often and not every story gets reported.
I want to believe that the woman told the truth and the baby will be found in a hospital somewhere. I really hope I'm wrong - but I keep fearing that she did something awful and has manufactured this 'bodega story.' I'll post an update as soon as I get one - I've called DH 5 times in the last hour, but it's going to his voicemail.
UPDATE - Just got off the phone with DH - BABY IS FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok - this happened in Jamaica Queens. The mother left her son in the Bodega, but the storeowner knew the mother and the father (they are not together). There seems to be a kind of small community there cause the Bodega owner knew enough to get the biological father over to the store ASAP. The father took the baby to his home and never called the police, thinking (I guess) that he'd work this out with the mother later. So the mother then has this breakdown later on and the police are called. A police officer went to the bodega and the store owner put the police in touch with the baby's father, who had the baby pretty much the whole day.
The sad thing is that the baby's father is a drug addict (allegedly). It seems it would be in the best interest of the child for him to be in foster care until this can be worked out. I cant help but hope he gets adopted by a loving couple.
I dont know anything about the laws regarding something like this - I dont know if the mom gets the child back after serving time or whatever.
I'm so glad that the baby is safe - but this little one will need a lot of prayers still.

THANK GOD they found the baby.. I so much that this baby gets the BEST care... Please God let this baby be put in the arms of a loving couple.
What about the grandparents? Could they get custody?

The "Safe Haven" law allowing you to drop a baby at a hospital, fire station or police station without legal consequence is only the very beginning:
5 days (New York); 7 days (Georgia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Oklahoma); 14 days (Delaware, Iowa, Virginia, and Wyoming); 45 days (Indiana and Kansas); 60 days (South Dakota and Texas); and 90 days (New Mexico).
Since this mom was back at work, I'm guessing the baby was older than that.
Either way, she obviously wasn't in her right mind.
She definitely has a chance to get the baby back, this sounds like a serious mental health issue. If she is good about getting treatment and taking her punishment, I'm sure she'll get another chance.

Heres the strange thing about the story...technically dont ya think the mother can be released? She didnt just leave the baby at A bodega...it sounds like she left the baby at a bodega where a family friend works who was going to contact the father...which sounds kinda responsible if you were losing your mind at that moment, no?
Sounds like without the bank at the time knowing ALL information assumed by her irrational thinking that she just left her baby at some strange bodega. In any event sounds like the mom still needs help and hopefully she will get the help she needs. I am willing to bet that they give her back the baby with a caseworker involved. Ive seen situations like this all the time. I am thinking they will pick best fit parent which sounds like neither but she is still mommy and if she ends up wanting the child and claiming she just had irrational thinking they will try to help her including trying to help her get the baby back.
