Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
Hmmm, I could imagine my DH saying that if we had a boy. I think he would have fun with it. Maybe if you found one at a yard sale or hand me down it wouldn't seem as bad to him. I don't know. Good luck.

He won't "let" you? Yikes. I would get it anyway. Has he never met a man chef before?

I agree with Summer and Stephanie. Seriously? Buy the thing anyway. It isn't like they are all pink and girly!

I'd mention that Emril, Bobby Flay, Mario Batallli, Gordon Ramsay and tons more male chefs are filthy rich.

ITA. Man, what would he say if he saw my two boys playing with their very unmasculine kitchen set. If it helps your DH, let him know that they will lose interest fast. My boys rarely play with it anymore after two months.

heheh...i guess it'll be scrambled eggs for the next month then
eta: i just told him that you girls said he's being ridiculous now he said he'll think about it. most of the time, he'll say no but usually end up saying "u make the decision".
shoot - he'll remember what our pastor said in premartial counseling - "happy wife, happy life"

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
the play kitchen is Noahs favorite toy and best money spent so far on a toy , and um...Most chef's are MEN?! tell him that. I would get it anyway. My Dh had no issues iwth it, but I have heard of men who do and I think its a bit wrong, and would try to change his mind, break that stereotyping now before DS gets older KWIM?

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
This was a sore subject with my dh too!! Years ago he told me NO WAY with our older boys, but when I had my third boy- I wanted one!! I told him someone gave it to me for free and had it all setup in the middle of his toys by the time dh got home(craigslist-cheap)! I got the step 2 one with the green countertop and it really looks like it was made for a boy! My ds plays with it everyday and it is definitely his favorite thing!!! btw-dh didn't even care that much in the end!

i just got mone for my 19 month ds and can't wait to put it together for him. a kitchen isn't girly in my opinion...my dsh and dad both can cook and i hope to teach my ds one day. it's just a toy with lots to do imho.

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
DS loves playing with the kitchen at a friend's house, so we got him one for Christmas. There are many kinds out there that aren't girly. We almost got the one with the add-on grill. That one was just too big for our small place.
Good luck!

That's right...many of the world's best chefs happen to me men.
I see nothing wrong with a boy having a pretend kitchen. It's a KITCHEN...Not a skirt!

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
aww poor baby, if he wanted it that is....
I cringe at the boy/girl stereotypes If they made all toys gender neutral there wouldnt be this problem
Besides... what woman doesnt love a man who can cook a romantic dinner? I'd say the kitchen would be a plus!
not to say a man who cant cook isnt manly or romantic but also it does not mean that one who can cook is 'girly'

I think that is a ridiculous reason to deny your child a great toy for creative play. What is wrong with men cooking?

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
I have to say I agree with you, but I can totally see my DH saying no to this too. He has already said that he wants to get DD some play tools, and when i asked him if we ever had a DS if he could have a doll or something he said no way.
Maybe if your DH is still against you getting it, you could have "grandma get it".

Why don't you try for the grill then or we got DD a 50's diner which has all the "kitchen" stuff but is more gender neutral. Image Attachment(s):

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
OK- I'm going to tell you this from a child development standpoint. EVERY preschool has a play kitchen- and there is a reason why. Symbolic playskills (the ability to use objects appropriately) are a HUGE part of childhood development.
What are almost ALL young children exposed to first in their lives? Being at home watching mommy/daddy/caregiver around the house. What do people do around the house? Cook, clean, talk on the phone, etc. The first things a child picks up and experiments with through imitation of what they see are usually phones and kitchen items/utensils- REGARDLESS of gender.
By getting a child their own items to play with you are facilitating this development while keeping them safe by making sure they are using something age appropriate. (DD somehow got the battery out of our real phone once ).
So- tell your husband that the play kitchen isn't going to make his son girly- it's going to help him develop symbolic playskills safely.
Can you tell I've been through this argument before?

Re: DH won't let me get a kitchen for DS
How about this one..My son had this when he was about 2 and played with it for years. He loved it and had so much fun. Not girly at all!!
Tell your husband your son can grow up and be an IRON CHEF!!!!
to add the top where the clock lifts up for storage and it makes noises. I can't remember what though. I think the stove sizzles. Stuff like that. Both sides have stuff to do and comes with cute food and pots!!
TOYS R US website has it for $59
