DHEA, anyone?

Is anyone taking DHEA? If so, what is it? Is it something your RE prescribed you or is it a dietary supplement that's OTC?

Thanks!

Re: DHEA, anyone?

My RE prescribed it to me a few months before IVF; its supposed to help women with low-ovarian reserve. I took 50 mg 2x/day.

Re: DHEA, anyone?

It's OTC. I get mine at Vitamin world.

50mg once a day.

Thanks, are there any side effects for taking them?
I'm definitely going to ask my RE about it.

Re: DHEA, anyone?

I'm on a 50mg/25mg dosage. The only side effect I think I noticed was being incredibly hungry the first few days on it. Could be that it was just a coincidence but I felt like I was eating everything in sight for those first days.

Re: DHEA, anyone?

I totally believe it was the DHEA and other supplements I took on my last IVF cycle with my OE's that got me 15 eggs at retrieval. It didn't work. But, for example, the cycle prior, I only got 3 eggs. That cycle didn't work for reasons I just found out recently. Chat Icon .

I took 75mg, in doses of 25mg 3x a day. And I also took it for 3 months prior to my cycle. I believe all the research I found said you must take it at least 3 cycles. I did a lot of research before starting and got permission from my RE to take it while stimming. They say you should take micronized version. I didn't. I took what I could find at Whole Foods and my local health food store. My only side affect was more acne than normal and my hair got really strong (opposite from everyone else I speak to). And of course lots of follicles. That whole cycle all the RE's doing my u/s would tell me 'you have lots of follicles'. I had never heard that before. 6 Follicles was more the norm for me.

I do admit that I see a regular endocrinologist and I knew he tested my DHEA levels. And I got those results and knew I was on the lower side (the older we get the lower our natural DHEA levels, so its probably dangerous for someone who is young to take it). There's a lot of info on the internet.

Good luck.

You can buy it OTC but please be careful and speak to your RE first.

I asked my RE about it and he said in my case it would work in reverse and make things worse.....he said it "might" work in women over 40 and those that are poor responders with low ovarian reserve.....if you are younger than 40, it will probably not work......but again, I would speak to your RE first....

I'm on my first cycle of IVF and on Day 4, my u/s only showed 3 follicles. I started searching on line and came across DHEA and was curious about it. I'm 28 but my FSH is about 14.3 this month and 12.6 back in february. I emailed my RE last night along with other questions but I haven't heard back from her. I will follow up with her tomorrow.
THanks for the info!
