DH's car got towed last night

He went to Northern Blvd. yesterday on his way home from work because he said he wanted to go to some of the car dealerships to look at some KIA trucks. Anyways he parked his car and left to go look at trucks.

So it was getting close to dinner time and I called his cell to see if he was on his way home and he tells me that the car was stolen! I was like ...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon . He said he had called the police and was waiting for them to come. He then calls me back about a half hour later and says that the car was not stolen and that it was towed because it was supposedly parked in a bus stop area. DH was flipping mad because he said he wasn't. He would never park his car in an area that's a bus stop, he's not an idiot. The cops said that this has happened to a lot of people lately who have parked their cars in the area where DH's car was parked. DH was livid and soaking wet mind you cuz it was pouring. The cops just left him in the pouring rain after they told him where his car was taken to.

So he went this morning to go pick up his car and has to pay $185.00...That stinks. But I told DH thank god that it was towed and not stolen. It really could have been much worse. He's a teacher and all his schoolwork was in the car. I don't know what would he would have done if it was all gone.

A special thank you to the police for leaving my DH out in the pouring rain without even offering him a ride home or anything. Guy had no freaking car and it was pouring. Couldn't they take pity on him???

Re: DH's car got towed last night

Did the cop say if it really was a bus stop spot where his car was? b/c if it wasnt, i would have gotten something in writing (if that was possible) from cop and brought it to the place my car was and said now give me my car and not paid.

Re: DH's car got towed last night

sorry the car was towed .. that really s*cks. Were you in the same precinct. Even if they were I cannot see a NYC cop driving your DH home, they are stretched to the limit usually and have other calls to answer. Couldn't he have called a cab?

I understand but come on...it was pouring rain. It's not like it was a hot sunny day.

DH just got home. On top of having to pay $185.00 there was a ticket on his windshield for a parking violation...unfreaking believable!

Oh no, that *****. I am glad he got his car back.
That was not really nice to leave him out there when it was pouring. Not, not nice.

Re: DH's car got towed last night

I thought cops were not allowed to give ride to people. He should have help him get a ride though or offer to call a taxi for him.

Exactly...they could have at least done that. That would have been better than just leaving him there in the rain...

That *****! Happened to my SIL and BIL because they had parking tickets, thought the car was stolen and when the cops came it turned out it had been towed.

No offense, but he is a grown man, he could figure out how to get a cab on his own, it really isn't "New Yorks Finest""s job to get him a taxi. Chat Icon

What if DH got mugged and had no money on him. What if he had left his wallet in his car that was towed?

Re: DH's car got towed last night

that stinks about his car getting towed, but I do agree with the PP's - to expect the NYPD to give your hubby a lift home is a bit much.

ETA: even if God forbid he had been mugged, a taxi could have taken him home and you could have met him with some $$. To insult the cops is a bit much, IMO.

Getting mugged is a different story, if he got mugged he would be a victim of a crime and then they probably would have taken him to a hospital.

That's a what if, luckily that wasn't the caseChat Icon

I am sorry dh's car got towed. That area of Northern is known for that. It stinks!! But like you said, thank goodness it wasnt stolen!

On a sidenote though..the cops arent allowed to drive somone home just because it is raining. If he had been mugged or hurt, different story. They have to call in everyone who gets in the squad car and that would be just unacceptable. I guess they figured he was a grown man who more than likely had a cell phone to call a cab or friend. It truly is not there job to see that your husband gets home safe and dry. As harsh as it may sound..they are literally just doing their jobs.

Sorry that his car was towed but the tow company will not tow the car unless there is a violation notice.

Which there was. When DH went to pick up his car this morning there was a violation notice along with a ticket fine of $115.00. DH plans on arguing this because he was not parked by any bus stop area.

Re: DH's car got towed last night

I know they do that sometimes in the City. I heard of this scam. Your car get towed and they claimed it was parked illegally when it was not.

Tow company gets money for you to get your car back, etc...

If there was a ticket it wasn't a scam.

He should go take pictures of where he was parked, but it is hard to fight tickets in the city, we've triedChat Icon

I think the biggest lesson is never to leave school work in your car. I know one of my coworkers had her car stolen with her bag in it with papers and her grade book - all gone! Since her story (1998) I have never done it.

I agree with the PPs. Police can't give everyone a ride. I think there are a ton of places to wait inside - like the KIA dealer - I bet if they want to sell him a car, they would let him wait for a cab or a ride.
