NYPD vent...and someone crushed my car last night...LONG (Update)

I don't even know where to start...

I was at a red light in Bklyn (less than a mile away from home) at 9:55 p.m. with two cars in front of me. All of sudden, the car in front of me reverses at full speed into me! She was going approximately 15 mpg a an angle! I honked my horn numerous times, and held my hand down on it, but she just did not stop. My car shifted a bit back....and she finally stopped! Thank God no one was behind me.

She pulls over, I pull over. I get out a pad, pen, insurance card, driver's license, and registration. I get out to look at the front of my ca - and my bumper is completely off, my grill is gone, and the hood of my car is bent up approximately 10". A gentleman witnessed the entire thing came ran over to me and asked me if I was okay, and then walked over to he car...not a scratch to her car, except my blue paint of my car on her bumper.

I walk to her car, she pulls her window down and said "I was trying to park."

I said, "Okay, but we were at a light, and I was behind you for a good 45 seconds, and you didn't make any move to show you were parking (not pulled over a bit to the side/no blinker)...."

She then says "Did I go into you or did you drive into me?" I said "You reversed at a RED light...do you have insurance?" She said "I'm not giving you any information until the cops come."

I wrote all my information down and gave her the piece of paper and proceeded to call the local precinct. By now, the witness (Mark) gave me his business card, and my husband arrived. He walked over to the woman and said "Can we please have your information until the officer's arrive? It may take up to an hour for them to come since there are no injuries." She again REFUSED.

Needless to say, after FIVE calls to 9-1-1, and THREE calls to the Desk Srgt. at the Precinct, the police finally arrive at 1:15 a.m.....THREE HOURS AND FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER.

I understand they were changing shifts at 11:30 p.m.....and I understand it's a Sunday night...into Monday morning...and there only two cars on patrol (I literally saw FIVE patrol cars pass by the scene w/out sirens or lights)....but THREE HOURS+ later you arrive?

I am just in utter shock and disgust that I sat there while this woman (I come to find out she's 42 y/o) acted as if I was going to steal her identity. The car/insurance/licensee all matched up and it was her....so it's not like she had something to hide....I called up NYPD cop-friends of mine, and they said it never takes them more than an hour...why is it that I had to wait THREE hours???????????????

I want to write a letter....My husband said it'll fall on deaf-ears. I just can't understand why I had to wait that long. We're in a VERY low crime area! I see more of the cops in my neighborhood outside of Starbucks than anywhere else!

Okay done. Thank you for allowing me to let that out.

Wow it sounds like someone skipped her meds yesterday. I am sorry to hear it took them that long. Glad to hear that you're okay and the crazy woman didn't take off.

My husband said "I could've robbed four stores here, and killed her, buried her body, and the cops still wouldn't be here in time."

I saw this () close to pulling her out of her car by her hair....but just stayed in my car!

Wow. I am so sorry this happened. Honeslty, as I was reading your story, first thing to pop in my head was "Drunk Driver". Wow. I can't believe she didn't realize she hit you!
I give you tons of credit for your patience, waiting 3+ hours for the cops. I would have lost it.
I hope it all gets resolved quickly.Chat Icon

Re: NYPD vent...and someone crushed my car last night...LONG

I am sorry for what happened that really stinks but glad that you are physically ok. I am curious about what her story to the police was on what happened. I am also a bit of a conspiracy theorist and the one I am coming up with for this is like someone posted she was drunk or high on something (good possibility since that was such a bone head move). Anyway, perhaps she was on something and since you said she called precient directly perhaps she knew the desk sergeant or another worker there who was helping her buy some time in order for her BAC to lower or something. I don't know, in this world anything can be anything.

The first thing I did was get close to her window (literally sticking my head in) to see if I smelled anything. She was sober (no liquor or drugs.) I honestly think it was a PURE accident. She is a reckless driver - she didn't turn her head around to see if there was another car (she was in a Jeep, and I'm in a Civic) behind her.

She's from Long Island (Freeport) and didn't really know her way around the neighborhood - she asked whether or not we were in Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst/Gravesend/Sheepshead Bay.

Needless to say, as soon as I got home last night, I called her insurance company and filed the claim.

The cops also did ask me if she:
1. turned her head around (no)
2. was on a cell phone (no)
3. Other passengers (yes - 1) was she talking to her (not from what I can see)
4. Was the music from her car audible (no)

I am so sorry this happened to you but glad you are ok. Some people are just dumb. Hello she hit you!!!

Unfortunatly, in my experience, car accidents that do not have major injusties take HOURS for the cops to show up. 1 accident where myself and my bf went to the hospital, the cops took OVER 2 hours to get to the scene & then they had to meet us at the hospital. Another accident one cops car actually drove past the scene and ignored us!!!!

If you make a complaint, let us know the end result Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: NYPD vent...and someone crushed my car last night...LONG; Update - last post

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update to the accident

______
Not so much of an update...but I'm a lot calmer today than I was yesterday.

I think it's ironic that I just got a call from the Police Department asking me for a donation...

I can't wait until they send me the literature and I sit down a write a nice long letter...

something along the lines of:

Had this been Saturday Feb. 16 - I would have donated a hefty lump of money....However, it is almost one week after my car accident, and the response time of 3.5 hrs is completely unacceptable....that hefty donation is now going to the FDNY.

As the French Say: Blo-Moi

Re: NYPD vent...and someone crushed my car last night...LONG (Update)

Wow that is an extremely long time to wait. I know the shift change is at 11:30 but that's why they have things called "late jobs" my friends get stuck on them all the time.
I would write a letter and send a copy directly to the precinct to the SGT and one to 1PP. It can't hurt.

I'm glad your ok though and that there was a witness!

Send the letter and CC it to as many important people you can think of- Chief of Police office, Mayor ETC.
It can't hurt right?

I just filed a complaint w/3-1-1. I do want to send it over to other agencies if possible.

This is a brief summary of the complaint:

This complaint is against the ***Precinct - Brooklyn, NY ****.

On the night of Sunday February 17, 2008 at 9:55 p.m., I made an initial call into the 9-1-1 operator that I was involved in a car accident (no injuries.)

After numerous (approximately four) calls into the 9-1-1 call centre and three additional calls into the **** Pct, police arrived at the scene shortly after 1:00 a.m. (Monday 2/18/2008.)

I am completely aware and understand that a car accident is listed as a lower priority. What disappoints me most is that on seven different occasions within the three hours awaiting response, I witnessed approximately four to five different patrol cars drive-by without stopping (patrol vehicles did not have lights or sirens on.)

I attempted to wave down three different cars, and the officers did not stop. In their defense, I understand they might have not realized I was waving them down, but it was raining and I waved frantically for assistance.

Needless to say, I am so disappointed as a resident in the same area as the Pct that it would take over three hours for a response. Additionally, when I spoke with the Pct. I was told assistance would be "on the way" within fifteen minutes as the call was assigned to a car. Furthermore, fifteen minutes turned into one hour and fifteen minutes, and with another call into the Pct. I was told that "shifts were changing"...I find that absolutely in-excusable.
