Diaper changing and bathing questions
Are u supposed to put something on the baby when changing the diaper everytime? Like a barrier between their skin an diaper? If so what? I hope Im making since
My other question is can a newborn be bathed in an infant bathtub or do they need more support?
Sorry if these are stupid questions

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
im not sure if this is what you mean but i worked at a daycare for 3 years in the newborn room and most parents would request that a&d or desitin be used after each diaper change. This would help protect the baby's bottom.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
for DS, was use powder with every change unless he has a rash (then we use triple paste)
for the bath, as soon as his cord fell off around 2 weeks, he went right into the infant tub which was in the bath tub!

i never asked why bc i was told to do what the parents asked at the daycare, so it was done. I do remember just using a small amount to keep the skin moist and I remember a&d working better and going on easier. As someone else posted you can use powder...i just didnt think of that bc powder is off limits at daycare.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
don't use desitin everytime because then the skin becomes immune to it. Use it when necessary. We use a&d every diaper change.
We used the whale bath for a few months and once dd could sit up, I just put her in the tub. I tried my kitchen sink but it's not deep enough.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
With DS#1 our pediatrician only recommended using vaseline. We used it for the first couple weeks, then just used on an as needed basis. Then used desitin but only on an as needed basis.
We used our infant tub to bathe our newborn...but I didn't give him a bath until he was a few weeks old, I was too nervous. Just did sponge baths.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
I plan on using either powder or desitin inbetween the diaper and baby. that's what my mom did with me and my brother and we never suffered from diaper rash.
As far as bathing, I just plan on using the bather I registered for in the bathtub or kitchen sink, whichever is easier!

We use Aquaphor or Vaseline at every change...it's best to use something at every change to prevent rash. Ped always said you want to keep a barrier between the skin and the wet diaper. DD is 9 mos and we just ran out of our first big tub of Aquaphor - well worth it! Dr. said it should be nice and greasy in the diaper to keep the wet urine from contacting the skin. Vaseline works just as well and is cheaper. Desitin or Triple Paste only if there is a bad rash.
ETA some mentioned powder - it is not recommended to use on babies b/c of them inhaling it or something. They say to use cornstarch powder if you must use at all. I sprinkle some in only when DD has a rash. Also have the Gold Bond Medicated Baby Powder for rashes - works great on top of Desitin!

I also worked as a teacher in a daycare and we always had to put a barrier on. With DS he is not prone to rashes at all so we use nothing unless we notice he gets a but red.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
When DS was a newborn we used A&D or Aquaphor at every change. Because the poop is like tar and will stick to their bottom without it making it impossible to get it off their skin.
Once his poop was a little looser we stopped and would only use cream if he had a rash. Thankfully that wasn't very often.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
Just saw the question about bath tub.
We used this:
It's by safety first. We put it in the regular tub. DS loved it.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
I used one of those blue tubs for bathing, it was just fine.
As far as diapering, I STILL but diaper cream every time on DC when changing.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
I used vaseline or desitin as needed with diaper changes.
My infant tub had a hammock type thing for when he was really small. We used it right away.

Re: Diaper changing and bathing questions
With DD we used A&D after every diaper change when she was a newborn. Yeah you run out of it, but you run out of diapers too so its just another thing to buy. I also took alot of it from the hospital before I was discharged. After a few months, I only used it when she started to look a bit irritated or after a bad diaper or whatever. As for bathing, we used that blue tub above with the sling. and just also held her in there for more support. you dont bathe them too much in the very beginning anyway. by about 2-3 months, they are a little more secure in that sling thing.
