Diaper rashes - how bad before calling Ped?
How bad does a diaper rash have to be before you call the pediatrician?
I've been really, really fortunate and DS has not had a diaper rash till 2 weeks ago.
But now, the one he has isn't going away and he screams whenever I go to change his diaper.
Before his hiney would get a little red but then it would back to normal the next day with a little Desitin.
This time it has not cleared for 2 weeks, and looks like little red spots/sores that are going to open. It has also spread to the creases of his thighs.
i feel so bad for the little guy. I've been trying to keep his diaper off for a bit after his bath and putting tons of Desitin and changing his diapers often, but it just is not clearing up and these sores look like they are going to open any day.

sounds like yeast........... call the ped and they can prescribe and anti fungal ointment. Yeast will only get worse if untreated and can become dangerous when they begin to get open sores which can turn into a bacterial infection as well and lead to sepsis.
Lots of air time and some probiotics in your DS diet will also help!

same fungi as a vaginal yeast infection, if he was on antibiotics he is more susceptible to getting them. Yeast grows in warm wet enviroments so diapers are the perfect breedin ground unfortunately. Adding probiotics helps the body to have enough healthy bacteria in your system to fight things such as yeast.

you can try a thicker cream like Triple Paste or beaudruex butt cream.
either one will work!! slab it on like frosting! nice and thick
it's a much thicker cream then destin.... has more zinc too...
good luck!! poor thing!

Holly, get Aquaphor and massage it in...I promise you that the next day it will be gone! If its a rash that consists of little red dots close to each other, in addition to the Aquaphor, put some baby powder on and it will be gone! My son has the most sensitive skin I've ever seen and thats the only thing that works for us! HTH
ETA: I would also stop using Desitin since its filled with parabens (chemicals).

Re: Diaper rashes - how bad before calling Ped?
Thanks ladies!
I just ran out and bought the Triple Paste (comes in a tub - $30?) and will try that as well as the Aquaphor.
if it doesn't get better, I'm going to call the Ped on Monday.

Re: Diaper rashes - how bad before calling Ped?
personally, I would call the ped before the weekend... who knows how much worse it could potentially get before monday
someone on this site had a home-grown recipe that moms have raved about... something like mylanta mixed with baby powder into a paste?
someone please correct me and the recipe! that could also help.........

Re: Diaper rashes - how bad before calling Ped?
AWWW poor thing. Seems like if it is 2 weeks and no improvement, I would get him to the Ped to check for Yeast...Or just try the triple paste for one day and then call..it should make some sort of difference in as little as a day.
My son gets bad ones too...not for that long but very frequently. And I feel so bad for them when they hurt like that.
