did anyone catch my boyfriend Dr. Sanjay Gupta this morning (and yes, this is quasi flu related, so if you aren't interested...you know what to do :P)
the believe they found the first person (a gorgeous little boy) to have become infected with the disease in Mexico.
they live very close to a LARGE pig plant owned by US company Smithfield. apparently many of the infected people come from this area, but Smithfield said they tested the pigs and found nothing.
but they wouldn't let Dr. Gupta in to see the pigs. they actually won't let anyone in, except the Mexican govt...who also claims the pigs are clean.
does anyone else think it's too much of a coincidence? they are investigating to see where else this little boy (who has since recovered) could have contracted the flu from...but you know what they say about sleeping with pigs.....
anywho...I really hope this company isn't covering up to sell more ham hocks.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't let a reporter (even if he is a doctor) into my plant because he wants to conduct his own investigation... I don't think that in and of itself is damning. I agree the coincidence is strong, but if the country's government is investigating, I think we need to respect that.

ah Kara...I added that they won't let ANYONE in...not just the good doctor. the mexican govt is making a shitload of money from american companies down there. I just don't give these "ministers" of health much confidence. there is rampant corruption down there....
it just seems sad to me. I am not necessarily saying that the company IS responsible, but it seems like maybe they should be more forthcoming.
maybe I am turning into mel gibson

Didn't see it, not much of a TV person here (I get all my news from LIF . I am not surprised though if they are hiding something. Don't most governments hide stuff?

I would think for impartiality or independence, no? I just think most "internal" investigations are suspect.
but that could also be my jaded mind.

I think they are damned if they do and damned if they don't in this situation. In the middle of this media frenzy going on about swine flu, I'm pretty sure the media would find just about any possible way to tie this plant to the outbreak (or something else horrible), even if it is squeaky clean... but maybe that's just me being jaded about the media and the ridiculous amount of power they weild.
This company is located in Mexico and was investigated by the Mexican government. My feelings about the Mexican government notwithstanding, I really don't think this company needs to let an endless line of other people in to investigate it.

I agree about not throwing open the gates to everyone.
and maybe they will let a team from here (since it's a US company) go in and independently verify.
I just feel kinda badly too that the people in the community who were infected are left without answers...EVERYONE suffering from this is left without answers.
but I also see your point as well. I guess only time will tell.
thank you for indulging me.

missed it, but i think that the tangent to this is that we need to have mandatory country of origin labeling on ALL food, not just that which comes from mass distributors.

Even if the flu generated from the Smithfield pig plant, and there is a cover up, in the long run all it means is that the flu generated from that plant and there is a coverup. You cannot contract swine flu by consuming pork from an infected pig.

Has the WHO requested their own investigation? I cannot imagine allowing people to willingly come into any private business.
I do agree though. Shady with a capital SHA....
The pictures on the news (cleverly edited I am sure) showed a large wastepipe draining into a body of water and the plant in the backround spewing billows of grey-black smoke. So given that the reporting is skewed, I am not sure that the company would willingly let anyone else in to creatively edit their reels....KWIM?

This wouldn't make any difference when it comes to swine flu. You can't get swine flu by eating pork...

no, i realize that. my line of thinking was more with the fact that it was an American food producer that has farms in a foreign country. sorry, my mind is working in non-analogous ways today.

Sorry! Yes, I totally agree with you on that point! I was focused on the connection to swine flu, oops!
