Did anyone go through a hard time transitioning to a regular cup from a sippy?

We are trying to get johnny to drink out of a "big boy" cup. He is used to sippy cups with the straws.

He refuses them. Its awful. He cries and cries. I sometimes wonder what is worth it...his teacher refuses to give him the sippy, she offers only a regular cup and yesterday he didn't drink one drop of liquid

I asked her why she just didn't give him the sippy and she said it was best to go cold turkey..that he would eventually drink when he was thirsty.

I hate not knowing what to do with such a simple thing. I KNOW he can drink from a cup, he just refuses to.

Any ideas?

we went from the straw cup to the spill proof cup (without the normal sippy top) It has a lip on it that simulates a cup and lets them run around without drenching the house
