Re: Did anyone watch this re: Elwood School District
I wish they'd put something on about Pat-Med. They convinced the teachers to have a wage freeze.. and they agreed hoping that they'd be able to have some smaller classes. Admins didn't thank them, but said they will now have enough money for a NEW FOOTBALL FIELD and all the admins are giving themselves a raise.
I get that there needs to be some focus on the teachers.. but I feel like administration is often bloated and overpaid.

I totally agree. People need to be vigilant in electing their school board officials as they are the checks and balance to the administrative staff. In this day and age every capital expenditure needs to be explained to the community and if is something the school really wants, put it on as an addendum to the budget not part of the budge itself and let the community vote on it. I also agree that the teachers union needs to be looked at. The salaries, in my opinion are not what is needed to be restructured as I believe that they deserve what they get paid, but the retirement funds and the insurance policies do need a major revamp. I know our district is paying over $10 million in retirement funds this year alone and it's only going to up from there. That is crazy....start a 401K program like the private sectors do.

I was checking out Elwood's budget on their website and they now want to buy the milk farm so they can either build a new school or a sports field.
But I have to pay for full day kindergarten because they have no money in the budget.

The last quote in the article was actually not true. NOT ALL the other districts have full time K btw. But either way, it's insane what some of these people make.

Funny you wrote this bc we just got mail from the pat-med teacher's union about that. No increase at all this year and 0% the following years. Stating how those savings should result in smaller classes, maintaining extracurriculars, etc. No mention of administrators of course! Didn't they get a new football field fairly recently?

Thank goodness some light is being shed on the admins. They get away with so much. The waste is unreal. Funny how Cuomo put the tax cap into place but forgot to push through a cap on admin salaries. Guess who's screwed? Students and teachers. I'm marching in Albany June 8th if anyone wants to join me.

I feel like the football field isn't that old.. but I don't know when they re-did it last. My nephew is in high school there and there are over 30 kids in some of his classes. I think he has 36 in one class. The focus SHOULD be on reducing class sizes and helping ALL students get more out of their experience.. not on making sure the football field looks good for the few kids who will be playing.
And the fact that the administrators decided to give themselves a raise makes me feel very negatively about the entire situation. It is like taking the money that the teachers gave up and lining their own pockets..

Re: Did anyone watch this re: Elwood School District
Almost every class will have over 30 kids in them. Cutting teachers and classes. Even getting rid of a self contained special Ed class and putting them into a larger class. Unreal!
