We picked a pediatrician before birth however our pediatrician didnt check DS at the hospital. He isnt affiliated with the hospital that DS was born in so we brought him in 2 days after we got home.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

I met with a pediatrician from a practice with multiple doctors. The doctor that saw Abby in the hospital was from the practice, but not the one I met with. Since then, Abby has not yet been examined by the original doctor I met with but I am fine with that. I would rather they all know who she is so in the event of an emergency, SOMEONE who knows her would be available.

I had one picked but we lived in Suffolk and I delivered in Nassau, so we just saw the ped on call at the hospital.

Even if you pick a pediatrician and they have no privileges at the hospital you deliver at you will still see one of the hospitals on call peds.

For Jaidy it was easier, we had already had Damien at a practice for at least 2 years and they had privileges at the hospital I delivered at.Chat Icon

We picked a practice before he was born. We didnt interview just went on a recommendation.

They were on staff at the hospital I delivered so then I met 3 different Drs while we were in the hospital, and liked one. So when I made my first appt I asked for her and she is still our dr a year later.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

I kind of picked a pediatrician before DD was born. I called a bunch pf places, weeded out those with long hold times, didn't take my insurance etc. and found one that I liked. They told me to call when DD was born. I got an appointment within a day of being home and i really love the dr. it worked out well for me.

I picked one a few weeks before giving birth. He is the one my ob/gyn uses for her kids and was recommended by a lot of LIF'ers.

We picked ours when I was 27 weeks. He asked that we call him when DS is born. The pediatrician visited DS in the NICU and spent some time chatting with DH and I before I was discharged.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

I knew who I wanted and contacted him a week before I was due. We did a phone interview and chatted for a while. He came to see DD the morning after the delivery, once more to talk to me and DH and see how I was doing, and again the day we were discharged.

Although you can just have the ped at the hospital check your baby, but you need to bring the baby to a ped a week after the birth.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

We did not get to officially choose a pediatrician before birth. We made plans to meet with her on a Saturday, but then I went into labor in the Thursday before the appt.

At the hospital when they asked me for the name of the pediatrician I gave them the name of the doctor even though we had not met her.

A hospital pediatrician examined my son at birth. When we were released from the hospital I called the pediatrican for an appt, and she ordered my son's medical records from the hospital.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

I picked one ahead of time; they just so happened to be the peds who are affliated with the hospital. It worked out though b/c the ped we chose at the practice was on call the night we had DD, so she has known DD since birth, which is very nice.

You can just call after you have the baby and make an appt. It is not necessary to have one prior.

We picked a pediatrician a couple months before DD was born however our pediatrician didnt check DD at the hospital. The practice was not affiliated with the hospital so we brought her in 2 days after we got home.

I did. We use Seaford Pediatrics. I didn't have to fill anything out all I had to do was tell the nurse at the hospital after my DD was born.

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

Didn't get to pick one (but we were planning on going to this pediatrics pratice) until after DD was born. DD was born 6 weeks early and stayed in the hospital for over 3 weeks. While she was in the hospital, she was seen by the NICU doctors. Once DD was discharged the hospital sent them DD's complete medical information.

I had one picked BUT I didn't need to have one.

All of the local pediatricians come in in the morning to check all the babies. If you didn't have one, one of the local ped's checked your baby and came in to meet you and talk to you.

At least that is how it was when I had my kids - might be different now.

That's how it was when DD was born in 07. I didn't pick a ped., used one they had there and we still go to her practice. Worked out great!

Re: Did everyone pick a pediatrician before birth?

We picked out our ped before Kaila was born, he was also the ped that was in the hospital from the practice so he did her first check there. Since then we've switched though
