Did The Taxes of Your New Home Go Up When You Bought It?
Question for the homeowners
When you were looking at your "potential" house and the taxes were on MLS, did they go up once you closed? As if the town reassessed them?
I ask b/c we saw a house with an inground pool and wonder if the taxes would go up immediately after closing like I'm talking 1-2K more

ours did not go up but i am greiving them to go down -our sale price was a 1/3 less than the assessed value
see what the assessed value is that may give you a good gage on if taxes will go up

we have been in our home for 2 years. Are taxes are 2k higher now then when we bought it. But this is also bc of some CO's that they had to get in order for us to buy... and of course those things bumped up our taxes

You really can't go by what the "taxes" are on MLS. You need to see what the assessment is and then get the tax rate. Assessment X tax rate = taxes. The current owners may have some exemptions that you may not qualify for. Also, some towns do reassess when there is a purchase. This happens especially if there are co's that need to be obtained.

ours no. But in our first house our neighbor's taxes were much lower than most others on the block. The house had been built by one person and then passed through the family. Then about a year after we bought they sold it outside the family.
2 years later, their taxes doubled putting them inline with the rest of the neighborhood.

ours were pretty much the same. went up a little because of one small CO. But if the owners are senior citiztens, their taxes will be lower because of different tax breaks that they get. They should be telling you what the taxes are without any of the STAR programs, but sometimes they don't. You can call that local Town Hall and find out the real taxes. GL!

no - just regular increases. don't forget that you have to reapply for STAR - the previous owner's STAR will cover you for the rest of the year, but you have to do for the next year.

Re: Did The Taxes of Your New Home Go Up When You Bought It?
Yes, because what was listed on MLS was the homeowners taxes with Advanced STAR. This was immediately removed when we closed. (We knew about this before we closed.) The STAR did not transfer over to us and it's not supposed to per their website. You have to reapply when you are in the home to see if you are eligible. We applied and now receive the Basic STAR discount.

Re: Did The Taxes of Your New Home Go Up When You Bought It?
Yes by 3K due to a senior star exemption but we did know ahead of time because obviously no one pays 4K in taxes on LI in our area. A little more was added because of CO that we didn't expect.

When I bought my house 11 years ago my taxes were about $3400. I now pay $7200 and have made no additions or anything major that would raise my taxes.

my taxes have gone up $2k over the last 4 years, but not because I moved in and something changed. I think it's just that taxes go up every year, esp. school tax.

No, did not go up due to purchase. All COs were in place.
