did you bank cord blood?????
dh & i are so confused as to whether we should do this or not. It seems like a great idea but I am still on the fence.
Also did you do it for just one child?

We banked for both of our boys....we felt like god forbid down the road, either of them need it, we would totally hate ourselves for not doing it (our peronal opinion). I hope to god we never, ever have to use it.

We just had our first child and banked his cord blood. It was adviced that we do this by my OB because we are of two different nationalities and it would be harder to find a match. That aside, we also felt like it was a good investment for our child. God forbid anything happened, we had the cord blood. I would feel very guilty if I didnt do it and needed it. JMO- thats just how I am. When we have another child, we will also bank his/her cord blood.

no we did not and have no plans to for #2 - just a personal decision, no real reason

We didn't, again like a pp, no particular reason, and we wouldn't do it for any other kids we might have.

No we did not, but we did donate DD#2's cord blood (donation was not available for #1) and will do the same for any future children.
I will be the first to admit that I didn't really do much research into banking, but it just seems to me that the whole thing is a "business" instead of a potential life-saving procedure--which I'm sure that it is--I feel like it's shoved down everyone's throats via Baby Story commercials, Parenting magazines and other media that cater to worried pregnant moms. But hey, that's just me...

We did it.... but there are numerous reasons for a family to bank it privately, publically, or choose to not bank.... We felt it was 'insurance money' we would regret not spending....
my friend (who is also a medical researcher with kids) said it best:
"knowing what we know about stem cells, and the potential uses that will arise in the next few decades, we HAVE to bank cord blood"
sums up our perspective perfectly....
(We expect cord blood to have many more applications, outside of childhood diseases, over the next couple decades... and being reasonably experienced with freezing down cells, I know the 'stash' will survive several decades....)
