Re: did you bank cord blood?????
We did.
i had a baby cousin who died of cancer 14 years ago. I think if this had been something my aunt could have done back then, maybe she woul dhave had a chance.
I would NEVER want to experiance what my aunt went though, so doing it was a no brainer for me & DH!
My sister did it for my niece also!
And yes....we will do it again!

Re: did you bank cord blood?????
we didn't with #1. didn't have a reason to. we did bank #2 however. but we had a strong reason to do so. due to medical issues with #1, there is a high probabolity he will be diabetic at some point down the road. now stem cell research is being used to replace islet cells to produce insulin with good results. we figured the best chance he has, is to have the cord blood from his sister, since his was not an option. so we banked hers for him.
hopefully we won't need it, but if we do, we have the option.

we did and hope it is the silliest money we ever spent
Same here.
My feeling was--it was money that we didn't necessarily HAVE to spend, but it's kinda like an insurance policy that can only be purchased at one moment in time.

Absolutely! for both our DD's.You never know what the future will hold and the possiblities are endless what can be done for them with their own stem cells if needed.

Yes, my ob recommended and my aunt (head of pediatric nursing at a local hospital) said she is now seeing the benefits of this (from those that banked years ago).

We banked for both of our boys....we felt like god forbid down the road, either of them need it, we would totally hate ourselves for not doing it (our peronal opinion). I hope to god we never, ever have to use it.
same here - we banked for dd and will bank this little ones cord blood as well

Since you didn't do it with your DS's do you have a plan if your DD and DS need cord blood?

Re: did you bank cord blood?????
we did it for both. A friend's son was diagnosed with luekemia while I was pregnant and they told them he wouldn't make it, he's been in remission for about 3 years now. I never wanted to be in her position and wonder "what if"
we will do it for all future children as well. once you get over the initial fee, the yearly cost in minimal and actually the initial fee was about the same price as my car insurance...which I don't plan on using either.

our hope is that if DS needs it he will be a match with DD's cord blood. we really didn't bank it for her, we banked it for him. if she ended up needing it, and he doesn't, then i'm still glad i did it. but this will be the closest match we would have if he needs it.

I understand what you are saying but what if they both need it? Did you give that any though?
We didn't bank with DD we spoke to several doctors and they didn't recommend it - so we are revisiting this idea again with DD#2 - and I was thinking of your scenario and was wondering what if BOTH children need something what would you do if you bank for one but not the other.

Re: did you bank cord blood?????
We were going to donate it to a bank but My OB waited before cutting the cord so DD actually received most of the blood in the cord which has great benefits as well.

not much you can do. but i do believe the banking is done so that they do not need to thaw the entire sample at one time. but don't hold me to that. and really, the likelihood of both kids needing it is slim. and if it comes down to that, they we look into getting someone else's blood from a public bank. we didn't think we would need to bank #1. and he showed up a bit earlier than expected and we weren't totally prepared when he was born. at least we have one sample on ice if we do need it for one of them.

Re: did you bank cord blood?????
we did not do it. I asked my OB and she said how much blood you get depends on the baby's wieght. my baby was under 6 pounds, he had so little blood I don' tthink they would have been able to save it anyway.

We did and hope we never need it. CBR, the company we used, also offers payment plans. I signed up for one but plan to pay off the balance once I return to work in the spring.
