Frankly... to spin this topic off a little bit... i don't see why Long Island should have different laws than NYC when it comes to the legality of junior driving.
Long Island should adopt NYC's more stricter rule of absolutely NO driving until you are either 18 or completed an accredited drivers-ed course.
The city does a much better job of putting "safer" young drivers on the road because of this.
It seems like Long Island accidents are always much worse than city accidents because of the amount of speed Long Islanders can do.
Dont you have to take a driving course before you get a license?

fine - the accident part is where we disagree, whatever. stop saying how differently we'd all feel if it happend to us. i don't know how i'd feel if my mother was the one who got hit and died. i don't know how'd i'd feel if my sister was the one who hit the woman who died. the question was what do we feel the punishement should be for the man it happened to.
well said sarah....
even if it was my mom i don't think i would be pushing jail time...
My dad was teaching me to drive well before my "permit". In fact i was pretty good by then.
DJ...you ask people to put yourself in the shoes of the people who lost a loved one...
BUT what about putting your shoes in the daughter who was being taught to drive...?
How you know deep down that the father was just trying to teach his daughter to drive..and brought her to a place he thought was safe...
I don't think going to jail or making him an example is doing anyone any good here

Unless the laws have changed, I don't think you do. I got my license without taking the course - I just had to pass the driving test.

Re: Did you guys hear about the dad
In NYC... if you want to get a REAL senior licence before 18... you must take a "school" drivers-ed course thats registered with the state DMV.
Then if you complete the course.... you get what they call a "blue card" (I believe its still called that).
Then if you are at LEAST 17... you can take your blue card to the DMV and schedule a road test (you don't even have to take the DMV written test). If you pass the road test... you get your senior "Class D" drivers licence that every other adult gets.
Anyone 16 and under cannot drive in the five boroughs ANYTIME... period... end of story(even if you completed drivers-ed at 16 which is possible).
If you have your blue card... then on your 17th bday you can take your road test and get your real licence. But you also cannot drive in NYC with just a blue card and no licence.
Once you turn 18... then the laws are the same for NYS and NYC.
The law is tricky... but I did a lot of investigating on this when I was younger. And since I actually took drivers ed and got my class D back when I was 17... i got a lot of education on the subject.

It was about $350 buks in my high school. Wasn't cheap at the time... but worth it to get your licence a year earlier than everyone else.
Remember... I am talking NYC laws only (five boros)... laws are different in Long Island.

No problem.
I find that a lot of people are misinformed about these junior driving laws... which makes me even more nutsy when somebody gets hurt over it.
The DMV link i posted on page 2 spells it all out very clearly.

Re: Did you guys hear about the dad
i think this is a horrible accident and the dad should be punished, but jail time is way to harsh. i think, what will come of this is other fathers across the country will think a little more before taking their unliscenced driver out practice driving.
