Did you start transitioning to milk b/f or after discussing it with ped?
Ds just turned one this past weekend. B/c of our schedules we won't be going for his 1 year visit for two weeks. He hasn't been since 9 mos (that is how it works at our ped) and at that visit it wasn't mentioned at all. Do all babies switch to milk completely at one? Is there any reason to rush this? Should I start to give him milk now or should I wait to discuss it with the ped and follow his advice? TIA!

I always did things before Ped told me to. I figure...it's my kid....if I feel she is ready for something I don't need the go ahead from a Dr...but that's just me.

I know this may sound really stupid but, how did you know the best way to do it then - how did u know the following - did u just cold turkey switch? Do it slowly? How much milk should they be getting per day?

It may seem stupid to others, but I took a lot of advice from these boards....I first tried to mix formula with milk and she wasn't going for it, so I decided to just give her milk and she did great.

Thank you! Do they get the same amount of milk as formula? DS is currently drinking about 20-24 oz of formula a day! That seems like ALOT of milk to me! And, if not - do u start substituting in juice and water to compensate?

I think once you start milk they really aren't supposed to go over 20 oz or so a day....I don't really go crazy counting the ounces she drinks, but if I feel like she is having a lot of milk I will substitute water. I have not given her juice...I feel like it's just sugar and empty calories.
I started giving her the same amount of milk as I did formula....but she would leave full sippy cups laying around...so I kind of just go with her lead....if she doesn't finish the sippy cup I put it in the fridge..if she does, I give her more....they know when they are full.

My ped had me wait until her 1 year visit. I don't think 2 weeks would hurt if you wanted to wait - but I don't think you would do him harm if you wanted to transition him now.

i also always started before the ped. told us to.
In reality you know your child best, no matter what the books or a dr says

I switched him @ 11 months, before discussing it with the ped.
I did tell the ped. afterwards and he was fine with it.

Re: Did you start transitioning to milk b/f or after discussing it with ped?
I was BF but I switched to whole milk and water around 10.5 mos without ped advise. DS was not too interested in BF so made transition, went smoothly without any issues. Ped had no prob once told her. They (Ped) have only raised thier kids (if they have any) so they are mostly basing their judgement on studies and literature. I think it is a case by case situation and MOM knows best.

I made the switch without consulting my ped. I also didn't mix or anything, just went to straight milk.
