Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
did anyone get charged for any of this stuff? i'm tempted...but my friend told me that they charged her for the stupid band that goes around your stomach to monitor the baby and for some other stuff. i just dont want to be hit up for a ton of money on things that aren't that costly...

Um, the fetal heart monitor? That is a piece of medical equipment, of course she would be charged for it.
I think most of us are talking diapers, formula, etc. And you don't get charged.

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
The special care unit nurses gave us at least 2 or 3 cases of the supplemental formula. First they gave us a case & then one nurse said "No you need to give them more - that formula is very expensive"
They gave us the little bottles that he was using while in the unit plus tons of diapers, tshirts, A&D ointment, alcohol swabs, etc.
The only thing that wasn't up for grabs was the baby blanket. Which um...was the one thing I really needed.

I took everything except linens. I did not take the baby blankets or undershirts.
So did I. And I kept chatting up the nurses and when we left we got enough formula to last almost a month.
same here

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
They loaded the cart with bottles & nipples. Even though I was BFing, my milk did not let down yet & I had to supplement with formula the first few days. I took home formula & they also gave me 3 cans of formula & 2 things of powder.
Winthrop has Similac w/Iron & Enfamil Lipil. DS preferred the Enfamil. I had to ask for it though, as they kept giving me the Similac, but see what your DS likes. Also they had regular nipples & orthodontic nipples available.

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
I took loads of formula. I think I had 20 or 30 bottles. Loads of blankets. Diapers. the paper towels they give for changing. Shirts. The nurse gave us everything. Oooo...Lots and lots of vaseline (still wasn't enough) for the circ.

htanks I just got my bill & was not charged. Not sure why your friend took the monitor, which is an expensive piece of med equipment.

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
Its different in CA.--They gave me some stuff but they were really stingy too. They told me to leave the extra diapers I didn't use, the blankets, her t-shirts, etc. I plan on using a different hospital the next time

The nurse told me to pack up...I did not know what she meant, then she winked. It was great...tons of long sleeve thick onsies, pads, net underwear, nipple cream, diapers...
Same here, they told me to take everything off the bassinets - so everyday I did just that -
At first I felt kind of bad about it, like I was taking too much, but I was told by one of the nurses that they just throw the unused stuff away - cuz it would be considered "contaminated".
I think maybe she was just trying to make me feel less like a thief.

They probably charged her for the whole monitor. I think it was all once piece.
Can I ask, why did she take it? I couldn't WAIT to have that crap off of me

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
The nurses actually encouraged us to take stuff home, so we did:
Tons of diapers Tons of jars of formula Wipes A couple of hats A bath tub and an aspirator
They were shoving the stuff in our arms before we left

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
Take anything and everything you can....we took formula, bottles, diapers, ointment, wipes and the little shirts the baby wore with the hand coverings. We basically cleaned out the bassinet each time it was bought to us....the nurses said go for it

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
I'm embarassed at how much I took - I swore they were going to arrest me - my room was right across from the supplies, so I and DH stole a hundred little Similac bottles and nipples, undershirts, receiving blankets... everything!!!
ETA - I still have 2 packages of maternity maxi pads - I used them recently for my AF because it was so bad, and 2 underpads - they are the best!!!!

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
My Mom was an OB nurse in the same hospital. She's the one that kept filling my bag with stuff. I made sure I took the binky out of the bassinett everytime they took him out of the room. Everytime he came back, we had a new one

I don't blame the hospital for charging her for that...Who takes the elastic band?? Like others said, that is part of the equipment. Its like taking the lens from glasses and not the frames as well...one doesn't really work without the other, lol...

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
Hearing all this I feel so cheated - all I came home with my my Similac bag and some pads!! My baby was in the NICU so no bassinet to clean out....maybe that was why. I never thought to ask for formula....maybe this time I will!!!

Re: Did you take formula home from the hospital
The nurses gave us a diaper bag full of RTF formula. I was such an idiot, I didn't take the extra pumping supplies I was using at the hospital (when I got home and opened my pump I realized they would have fit!), I'm sure they wouldn't have minded too because they were "contaminated." I did take one long sleeve shirt (I loved it because it folded over the hands so she couldn't scratch her eyes in her sleep), a hat, and a hospital blanket (I loved that blanket, it was longer than the ones I had at home, so much easier to swaddle her in it!). She went home wearing the hat and wrapped in the blanket, so I think the nurses would have said something if it wasn't okay. Oh and also lansinoh cream and a squirt bottle for my own comfort.
