Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House
Well, I don't know if it's too late because maybe she knows you TOO well, but you know me, I am a SUPER picky eater - I will ONLY eat VERY PLAIN foods. Maybe you can tell her "I know I used to be more adventurous but I guess my tastes have changed..." and then bring your own stuff OR "I am SERIOUSLY watching my diet right now, our cholesterol is too high and I can't eat that" and bring your own food. If she says "Awww... come on..." Just say "No, I'm sorry, it's a commitment I am making to live and be healthier, and you can't just pick and choose when you'll eat well, you have to be that way 100% of the time..." BOTH of these have worked for me. LASTLY - you could do the 'I developed a food allergy' thing (OR better yet - blame the kids for the allergies...) I am the QUEEN of not eating other people's cooking.

I would just suck it up... it's one meal out a million meals in your life. If she asks why you're not eating a lot tell her your stomach is feeling a little funky but what you have had you really enjoyed.
me too - I would never not go to a friends house because I didn't like their cooking. I would bring something or just not eat. I would rather see my friend than eat.

OMG! I hope you don't think that I would choose not to see my friend because of her cooking!
I see her fairly often - she has come over my house and we go out to eat and we go to other parties and things. But I really prefer to avoid events where she will be cooking. Not only for MY stomach's sake - but I have a husband and 2 children as well.
I am a bit concerned that my kids or husband will hurt her feelings since they are a little less careful with their words.

Posted by tray831 Tomato Tofu Ice Cream. Is that an example you used or did this person actually make it. That is disgusting.
I made that up. She does make weird things though... for example - pineapples and bacon in orange jello with curry flavored whipped cream. She thinks it is creative because she puts things together that nobody has done before... but there is a REASON that you don't mix pickled herrings in cream sauce with egg salad and blueberries.
Oh my god
Oh my god
Why?

Re: Dinner at a Bad Chef's House
Start a tradition of going potluck! You can bring a dish or two when you go there, she can do the same when she comes over. That way, you're helping out and you know that if her food is inedible, you and your family will have something to eat.

What could get messed up at a BBQ? Or at least I would think there'd be less things to get screwed up!!
I think a BBQ would be a safer bet than some future dinner party!
ITA!
but after reading examples of her creations , can't you say...oh this is a different combination, but I don't really like it that much
if she will get insulted I just wouldn't eat and say you weren't feeling well

I can't believe those combos! What do the other guests say? Do they all just suffer through it or does she notice that a lot of her food goes uneaten when she cooks? I think if I tried serving something that over the top people would come out and ask me what I was thinking!

Her newfound creativity started about a year ago - so I have PERSONALLY only been subjected to her stuff about 3 times. She is the SWEETEST human being alive. And totally unassuming. She really thinks that she cooks well and none of us have the heart to tell her that her stuff is awful when she is so filled with pride. It would be like kicking a puppy.
