Disgusted...final update
Please don't quote.
I found out yesterday that two of my students, 7th grade girls, beat up a fifth grader, kicking her and banging her head into a car. Another of my students and her sister, also a 5th grader, took video and put it on Facebook. 
I don't know what these kids are thinking. The girls took the video down and I don't know why no one is pursuing charges. Both girls on the video blatantly lied about their involvement until the video surfaced. I'm so disgusted, not only that they did this, but that they are getting off with a slap on the wrist
And on a side note, I get judged on how these kids do on tests. You can tell how much they value learning.

Absolutely ridiculous! The parents of the fifth grader needs to press charges. Then the police will investigate and will know there is video or was. Then the older girls would have to go to court but if the parents don't press charges nothing happens......ridiculous
I hear ya about those tests.......the public has nooooooo idea what we go through!

Also does your principal know about the video couldn't he get them on some chancellor regulations and suspend? Weird...

The kids who did that need to be punished, or they will do it again, worse next time.... and possibly kill someone.

Yes, this needs to be pursued. This is not how human beings act in a civilization!! Several of these kids are just plain criminal.
I feel your pain.
Please don't quote or make reference to the district if you know where I work...
Today, one day after the Ohio shooting, I found out a student (whom I come into contact with, had a serious weapon) in his backpack the entire day yesterday... police arrested him... he got 5 days out of school suspension and this is in a "nice" LI district. He could have killed someone!! And from what I can tell, no parents are calling the school asking for answers

Soooooo....these girls don't quit. It seems like we are going in circles from a discipline point of view- I don't know if charges are being pressed or if there will be a suspension. Personally I am all for maximum punishment allowed, but it's for the dean/principal to dole it out.
Right before break, ironically enough, my class won a mural contest for "Respect for All" week. We're getting a pizza party. I told the three girls they would not be allowed to attend and they threw fits, still denying everything, calling the dean a liar (the dean saw the video) and claiming self-defense. I pointed out to the one who said she was hit first that I have no opposition to hitting back- but the victim was on the ground being kicked. When I pointed that out my student actually had nothing to say- she knew she was done.
The two worst ones are still at it- one makes ethnic slurs against a new kid, something that also came to light at the end of yesterday, and the other girl said some horrible things to another classmate. One or both of them need to be taken out of my class, in part because I am getting very close to saying something that will get ME in BIG trouble- like Daily News front-page-trouble. I am so done.

That is SO disturbing.
I don't think I knew you were middle school. They are tough at that age. I like the older ones a lot better!
I hope the girl is okay.

The girl is fine. The parents came in today and the police were here. At this point no one is pressing charges, but the girls know they are out of chances. One of the girls is going to a new class Monday. I think it will be better for her. Her father came in and without going into detail I have more understanding of this student, not that I am condoning her conduct but I have some added perspective, which has made me pretty depressed.   But I think she is glad to be getting a fresh start.
