Disney World vs Disneyland

Next year, my son will be 5. We are looking to go to Disney some point during the summer (June-August) as I’m a teacher.

What one do you think is better - Disney World or Disneyland. If we do California, we’ll also do a few days in San Diego.

My other option is to do 5 days sometime in April or May (dates that don’t coincide with spring break). If we do that, it would be Disney world. I can’t take more than 5 days because my district limits us to 3 consecutive personal days. I really do not want to stand in line for hours going during a peak time - I did that every year growing up...

Disney World vs Disneyland

We have been to Disney World like 20 times or more. We have been to Disneyland twice, we were just there last week for 6 days. I LOVE Disneyland so much more than World. It's small, yes. Everyone says that. But, between the two parks there, they have more rides than all four parks at WDW. Plus no boats, buses, etc. You can stay across the street and walk to the park. We stay at the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park hotel, and it's literally across the street. Disneyland has old school fast pass, so you don't have to stress about making reservations for rides 3 months out. Same for dining, minimal dining reservations to make there. Many of the rides are much better versions than at WDW. Small World is awesome, Thunder Mountain is better, Indiana Jones ride is cool. I could go on and on. I also love that it's Walt's original park. One he designed himself and went to. They leave the lamp on in his apartment over the firehouse there. I love seeing that! I love the nostalgia of the entire place! Not to mention, the weather is gorgeous when we go! Cool mornings and evenings. Sunshine all day, no rain and zero humidity! It's so pleasant!! We get 5 day tickets and take our time there. You can park hop by literally walking across the Courtyard. It's super easy! Plus, their parks are open later hours. The hours this past week were like 8am to midnight for Disneyland, and like 8am to 10pm at California Adventure. Plus, they have Carsland at California Adventure, which is AMAZING! Especially at night!

A great resource for all things Disneyland is Disneyland Daily! She is awesome!

I totally agree that Cali Disneyland is great... much easier to navigate with restaurants all within a really short walk away. Rides are more cartoony and the character interactions are really cool (many are in “houses”). Attractions are lumped together (Jedi training is in the main park). Easier transportation system too if off site.

I went during spring break which was a different week in Cali last year. We went for one day as part of a San Diego trip.

Only negatives are that it’s a far flight.

I honestly don’t find Florida that bad. The fast pass has you avoid the huge waits from childhood. It takes 2 hours to get there... plus I don’t mind heat. I don’t just go for Disney though. We always go on vacation somewhere else in Florida too. I can only take 2-3 days of Disney.

I second everything she said. I also love that you can sit in the courtyard and watch the fireworks.

All this. I LOVE Disneyland...we have family in So-Cal, so as a kid I would go to Disneyland often. I love everything that PP said and that it is the original!

Edited to say Pirates of the Caribbean is SOOO much better! Space Mountain also used to be, but in all fairness, I have not been to Florida in a while and I believe it was redone, so I don't know if that holds true anymore.

Re: Disney World vs Disneyland

We went to DW and DL both at the end of June 2 years apart. DL was a 2 day excursion as part of our main trip to San Diego while we spent a week at all of the different parks at DW. We loved DL so much more. It’s smaller, easier to navigate especially without planning the whole day, the crowds are more manageable (the longest line was Peter Pan, which was as 45 minutes compared to at least 60-90 at DW), the weather was so much better because of the lack of humidity and there are plenty of hotels within walking distance. San Diego is also a great place to visit and there are plenty of family friendly activities.

Disney World vs Disneyland

Thanks everyone!

I am seriously leaning towards DL. I already started planting the seed in my DH’s mind. I know it’s a longer flight but that doesn’t really bother me.

I say go for it! You will enjoy it! Definitely join Laaast Minute Club (make sure it says club and not all the aaaa's...LIF blocks that site out), and you get save quite a bit on tickets. It costs to join the club, but if you google you can find a free promo code!

I've never been to Disneyland before, but I loved San Diego so much that we decided to stay in San Diego rather than add a couple of days to Disneyland... so because you would also see san diego, I say go to Cali! Plus I hear its easier to go on rides and walk around in Disneyland. If the flights were shorter I would probably choose that over Disney World.

Can you FM me the exact website. I typed in Last minute club and it brought me to some Canadian site. Then I did a google search and it brought me somewhere else. I just want to make sure i'm on the right site before I purchase. Saving $40 a ticket is a great deal!

Quick Disneyland question: We are headed there in a couple of weeks and are debating whether we should get the hopper pass. Is it worth it for the 2 days?

Thanks!

We only have one child and he’ll be over 5 when we go so I’m hoping the flight will be fine. We’ll have a layover since we are not flying out of a big airport. Plus I’m not sure if we’d do more than 2 parks anyway.

I plan on mapping out both trips and seeing what is a better value for us.

Re: Disney World vs Disneyland

Added to say we just came back from a trip to Disney midweek during late July.
We did other things as well (I typically spend 2-3 days MAX at the parks and combo with Ft Lauderdale and or Clearwater).

Honestly, Florida was great. It was close, weather was hot but fine (mid to high 80s). With Fast pass and getting up early in the AM, we literally did 75% of the park with little to no wait. It was not stressful. I did it solo with 3 kids. We stayed at a relatively overpriced Disney moderate resort (not on monorail). It doesn’t take a degree or too much energy or planning to go and have a great time.

We did Cali too. It's different (we stayed on the coast which at the time was too cold to swim). Did Disney as a day trip. Park is nice too. I’d honestly do it with older kids and explore the zoos out there.

If you are only there for 2 days, I would get the hopper. It's only $50 extra. We get 5 day non hopping tickets, but if I only had 2 days, I would hop. Disneyland park stays open until midnight typically, and CA closes earlier.

That's my thoughts. It's like Orlando- the armpit of Florida- or the West Coast and southern Cali.

I think my choice is made.
