Do all carseat expire in 5 years?
At 36 weeks pg, I woke up last night with the sudden thought that my car seat could be expired! I had DD in 2006, so would that mean that the seat expires in 2011? DH has to get it out of the attic to look for sure, but now I am worried about it.
ETA: w ill the car seat SAY when it expires, or do I have a way to look that up??

Yes. There should be a date on the bottom

There should be a manufacturers date on the bottom of the carseat - good luck!

I am curious about this too... a friend gave us a like-new Britax Boulevard as a second seat to keep in my mother's car (doesn't get used much at all) but I just looked and it was manufactured in 2005????

No.
Most seats are 6 years.
But there are many seats out there that last longer. For example, the new version Britax are 7 years, except for the Frontier which is 9 years.
You have to read your manual and check the seat for date of manufacture.
A classic Britax manufactured in 2006 will expire in 2012
Also, when you buy a new seat from the store, pay attention to that date (it is printed on the box in most cases) so that you are not buying a seat that is already a year or more old. BRU is infamous for not rotating their stock.

I just did the same thing then went to the graco baby website and it said seats expire in 6 years. All seats are different just go to the manufacturer website and check.

The plastic degrades over time, with the UV light, temperature fluctuations, general plastic degradation, etc. They *look* just fine, but the structural integrity is no longer good.

Re: Do all carseat expire in 5 years?
I always thought that Britax seats had a 9 year expiration? We have one that was purchased in 2006, still use with the little girl we babysit for, and were planning on using it with the new baby on the way also!
It is a Britax Marathon! The manual is in the seat, I guess I'll be checking it tomorrow morning!

My 06 Boulevard will expire in 3 months. It's on the seat itself.

Re: Do all carseat expire in 5 years?
Car Seat do expire. Normally this problem does not come into play unless we are dealing with a third child or a hand-me-down seat.
At one time seats all expired in 6 years. In recent time, as Tarabelle posted new expiration dates, longer times entered the market.
The ket is to check the seat back for a time satmp - or if in doubt, check with the manufacturer.
Please make no mistake about it, these dates are real, regardless of how new the seat looks. The time the seat was not used does not extend the date.
I have had parents on a regular basis question and refuse to recognize this. I have to be harsh here, but, why are we willing to go on the "cheap" with regard to safety. Buy a new seat for your child.
You do not know the complete history of the borrowed, hand-me-down or friends seat --- Buy a new seat for your child.
We will buy new clothes, new toys, new diapers, supplies, furniture, but we will go on the "cheap" with regard to the one item that will be used the longest time and for safety. Buy a new seat for your child.
In case anyone feels I have been too subtile here ---- Buy a new seat for your child.
