do any of your DC go to solo-practice pediatricians?

I am interviewing peds right now and found one that I both like and comes highly recommended, but he is essentially a solo practice---he has another Dr that works very part time for him---she sees some of the teenage girls who don't want to see a guy and covers him when he goes on vacation. pros/cons? he obviously doesn't work 7 days a week, and shares call with a group of peds......any input would help! TIA!

My ped is basically a solo practice. He has someone to cover him if he goes away or something - but I have only seen him. My cousin has been working there for years and is great friends with him - so god forbid anything ever happened we could get in touch with him anytime/anywhere.

I have also heard that he goes into the office on days when he has off to meet with patients.

He - IMO - is one of the best peds out there. Brilliant and just amazing.

If you really like the dr. then I say you should use them! Chat Icon

We use a group practice, and to be honest, I kind of wish we had a doctor who had a solo practice. I feel that in a group practice, the doctors don't have as much of an 'investment' in their patients as solo practitioners. If you like this doctor, I say definitely go for it.

DS goes to a solo practice pediatrician and so far we have no issues. He is only 4 months at the moment!

She has another doctor that works at the same location, but they are separate. He will cover for her on her days off. Seems like it will work out fine and I have no problems with it!

I go to a solo practitioner. I love the Dr, and we are always seen by her personally- never a nurse or assistant. I've only been going there for 8 months (since DS was born) and haven't had the opportunity to deal with her alternate on-call peds or when she's been on vacation.

My dr is solo - I love his office.
When he isn't in, or after hours we use his on call dr, who I also love. It works for us.

DS sees a solo practioner as well. He was my ped growing up and was solo then as well.

Before we moved, we went once to a group practice on Staten Island and I didn't like that I didn't know who I was going to see.

Our ped shares his office space with another doctor and they cover for each other.

I'm looking to switch to a solo pedi. I am in a group practice right now, and although happy, it is just long waits and lots of other things. I go to a sole practicioner OB and never had any issues, so I am not hesitant to switch.

DC go to a solo-practice ped. He was my ped, and also my Boy Scout Scoutmaster. I have his home number, and I know where he lives... Chat Icon

He has another Dr. to cover for him when he's out, and we've never had a problem.

Before I moved I went to a solo-practice and her office was in her house. I could call at anytime and she answerd the phone or would call you back very soon. If she didn't have hours on a particular day but DS was sick she would have me bring him in since it wasn't a far trip for her Chat Icon . she even opened up for me the day we were moving and on our way to our new house she opened to do DS well visit for 15 months and DD 1 week well visit. She has a covering doctor but I never saw him but I have her he is good also.
Now I go to a group practice and I have only seen one dr. and although she wouldn't have been my first choice she is starting to grow on me.

I go to a solo prac.- I like it b.c I don't deal with PAs or nurses only one dr - who knows my child very well. If she is sick or having issues I don't have to explain things 5 times to different doctors. My dr doesn't have an answering service but routes the calls to his home - so he is always available and knows my DD when I have had to call about something.

He has a group that covers for him when he goes on vacation once a year.

Re: do any of your DC go to solo-practice pediatricians?

I used to go to a group practice and I was very unhappy with it because everytime I went in I felt like I had a different Dr. so there wasn't any consistency.. they never knew what was going on with my kids and half the time contradicted each other... I switched to a solo practice and I am soo soo happy with it... our Dr. knows the kids and remembers everything that is going on with them.. we even have her cell phone number so if we need to talk to her we can call any time (which I have had to do).. I would never go back to a group practice again.

I feel that it's better to have solo, it's just easy for me and for my daughter , also I don't have to deal with dif. docs all the time, and if I have to call with questions I don't have to get into whole history, he knows who my child is and her history, plus he has someone to cover for him if he has to go away

We go to a solo practice, though I've only been there a couple times so far. The doctor has always seen DC herself though, and she's quick to return phone calls. She also has email for less urgent questions, and I've used that a couple times as well.

I do like the fact that though she has only seen him a few times, she remembers the details about him and she remembers DH and my own health history as well.

our ped is also a solo practicioner. He has one day off on the weekend and he has a covering doctor. I find it to be very personalized attention.

Kind of what happened with us, but I didn't know her before she went on her own. I love her. I think she's great and I love the one on one. She KNOWS my daughter inside and out and there's no confusion by seeing 3+ doctors. Some people love that, don't get me wrong, but for me, I wasn't into it.

I had kind of an emergency visit the other day (nothing serious) but she called me on Sunday to check on us and see how everything was and I loved how personal it is.

I have her cell # and can reach her, not a phone service, or answering machine, at any time, whenever need be.
