Do I have a right to be OUTRAGED by this??!! (Warning, long)
I know, here comes another negative post from MrsRivera But I have to get this out.
Today, I met with my assistant principal in preparation for going back to work on Monday. I typically teach 5th grade, but because I've been out so long between maternity leave and the back surgery, they are leaving the perm. sub in my room and letting me do small-group pullouts for the rest of the year
So, I went in to discuss some specifics with my AP, who also just had a baby about a month after me. I told her I was BF, and I am very committed to continuing. Therefore, I will need 2 20-minute pump breaks during the day. BTW, this is a totally fair request...teachers in our building get a 35 minute prep period as well as a 20 minute lunch, adding up to 55 minutes a day that we're not actively teaching. I was only asking for 40 minutes to pump.
So, she says to me, "I spoke to the principal and he is absolutely fine with that, but you won't be entitled to a lunch break"
.......
.......
......what??!!!!!
I looked at her and laughed. I then noticed she wasn't laughing and said, "Are you serious?" to which she replied, "Yes".
Yes, she actually just told me that because I'm asking to pump during my workday, she's removing my lunch. Yes, she's actually expecting me to work a 7-2:30 workday with NO break for lunch.
I said to her, "I really didn't want to go this route, but...do you realize that depriving me of a lunchbreak because I choose to BF is illegal?" She just looked at me like this
I also said, "I'd also like to inform you, with the utmost respect of course, that I have a right to tend to my breastfeeding child while I'm at work, and that's a right that's protected by law". She actually looked at me and said, "Well, Beth, you know....I had to wean my son at 6 weeks, and that sucked, but you have to make some compromises when coming back to work. Would formula feeding really be the end of the world?"
I was absolutely LIVID!!!!!!!!

If the total break time adds up to 55 minutes for everyone else, then you should get that. I'm not sure whether they have to give you more but it would be nice.

You absolutely have every right to be livid! If they are not willing to work with you on this, speak with your union rep. Isn't that what the are there for?

That's crazy!!!! Where I teach, we are on hour periods and I get one prep and a lunch. Your 40mins IMHO I would think can be considered a prep and you should still be entitled to a lunch....maybe they think you are supposed to eat and pump!
I think it is totally outrageous, I'm sorry your going through this.

Re: Do I have a right to be OUTRAGED by this??!! (Warning, long)
it appears you are asking for extra time than the other employees. as long as your time equals theirs, they should allow you the time. so if you're asking for 2 20 min pumping breaks, you should get a 15 minute lunch to equal the 55 min break time of the other employees.
so yes, you are entitled to a 15 minute lunch break and if you don't get that, contact your union. but i do think if you're asking for more time than is allowed, you shouldn't be entitled to it.

ITA.
I don't think it would be fair to expect 2 20 minute breaks on top of the typical 55 mins (total) that the other employees get.

Unfortunately, this is what happened when you work somewhere where there IS no union. NC schools are not unionized.
I could totally understand if I was asking for something extra that other employees weren't getting...but I'm not.
I'm most upset by the fact that they even presented the idea of a workday without any breaks to eat!!!!

That's not what I'm asking for at all. Heck, I even told my principal that I only needed 10 minutes to eat!

If you're only expecting what everyone else is getting and they're denying you, then you have EVERY right to be angry! The formula comment was definitely rude and uncalled for.

I think what your AP was COMPLETELY out of line in ANY statment she said.
I do have a question though, is a "prep" period really considered a break?? or are is that what it is unofficially?? I know my sister spends a lot of time doing work during her prep period. Is the "official" lunch just 25 or 30 min and you are requesting extra? Seems like this is a really gray area unfortunately.... ETA...I just read your re-response and I think this is completely uncalled for, I am sorry about this

A prep period is meant to be time to "catch up" on any paperwork, emails to parents, etc. that you may need to do. BUT, they are to be used however you see fit. If you choose to use your prep to drink coffee and stare at the wall (don't laugh, I've done it ), then that's completely ok.
Typically I run around the building like a loon during my prep periods. So I won't lie, I'm usually pretty productive, though they can be used as "real" breaks, if that makes any sense.
The "official" lunchtime for teachers is 20 minutes, and I only requested 10

I agree. I am not a teacher so I admit to having no idea what the rules are for this. So if the prep period is truly free time the sure you are entitled to it, but if you are required to prep for classes during that time, then it is a grey area.
I also agree that the BF'ing comment was uncalled for, unprofessional and RUDE. I give you credit for NOT slapping her. Even if she does not agree with BF'ing, WHO says stuff like that to co-workers? WOW for a woman she has a SET that is made of steel. I would not expect that comment from someone who teaches children for a living and from a fellow mother. She sounds like a REAL piece of work.

Why not just go back to your AP and tell her you changed your mind and you would like to stick with your original time alotted of a 35 minute prep time and a 20 minute lunch. And do your pumping then. It is nobodies business what you do with your time. This way you get both your 20 minute pumping sessions and you still get he extra 15 minutes for lunch.

Re: Do I have a right to be OUTRAGED by this??!! (Warning, long)
the only thing i can think of is that they can't schedule you 3 separate breaks. in that case, ask for a 20 minute lunch and a 35 minute prep--you can pump on both breaks and use the longer one to eat as well.
you probably can't pick the times, but as long as they're not back-to-back you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: Do I have a right to be OUTRAGED by this??!! (Warning, long)
First and foremost, your AP's response is not only rude it is completely unprofessional and uncalled for. She cannot expect you to make the same decisions for your child that she has made for hers.
Why can't they give you a 20 minute break for pumping and then another 35 minute break for pumping and eating?
That would seem fair as it would equal the same 55 minutes total everyone else gets.
