I don't think it would be fair to expect 2 20 minute breaks on top of the typical 55 mins (total) that the other employees get.

That's not what I'm asking for at all. Heck, I even told my principal that I only needed 10 minutes to eat!

I would be flipping out!!! You have EVERY right to be angry!!!!

Unfortunately, the principal was the one who came up with this brilliant plan of doing away with my lunch.

Her comments were just plain rude. But as far as the breaks, I think it's a foggy area since prep time is still work time, and a lunch break is a specified break. I'm not sure of the laws on BFing, but I thought they only entitle a person with a place to pump other than a restroom? Regardless, you need to eat, so I would schedule an appt. with the principal and try to come up with a resolution. Chat Icon

Re: Do I have a right to be OUTRAGED by this??!! (Warning, long)

You need to check with your union. Because there WERE attempts to make BF legal in the workplace, I am not aware the Law was implemented yet. Maybe in NC but I am not aware they are in effect in NY at all.

As far as no allowing a lunch. Again you need to check with your union on what is allowed. I am not sure of you employee's "status". As in hourly, salaried, etc... In NY, you need a 30 minutes break after 6 hour of work. Again, it may change from State to State and what your union has negociated.

But regardless, I cannot see being "legal" that you are not allowed to have a total of 55 minutes break in your day just because you are splitting it in 3 parts.

IF you cannot get what you want and you have a room for yourself, I would just start pumping and put a BF cover up so you are not exposed. Trust me! They will provide with a room and time to do it. NOBODY can tell you to wean from BFing. That I am pretty sure is illegal.

ETA: I just saw the non union in NC. I suggest your contact the Labor Commission. They will tell you the Law. I remember contacting them before when I was living in NC.

The poster already said she doesn't have a union.

Beth~ I always pump while I'm eating my lunch. It's a feat, but totally doable. I also wear my nursing cover *just in case*.

sadly, NC is one of those states with limited laws regarding breastfeeding. They have just one:
N.C. Gen. Stat. § 14-190.9 (1993) states that a woman is allowed to breastfeed in any public or private location, and that she is not in violation of indecent exposure laws. (HB 1143)

Yes, you have the right to be outraged, I'd be livid. Especially the part she said to you that she weaned her child at 6 weeks and "will formula feed our child be the end of the world"
what she does is her choice, just like how you chose to feed your child is yours and none of her business!! VERY offensive IMO. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know, I can't believe it. Chat Icon I'm so used to NY laws, sometimes I forget that I live in a different place where the laws can be (and usually are) different.

Still waiting for a resolution on this, but I am really just SOOOO dreading going back to work on Monday, just because of this.

And as far as a place to pump, they offered me use of the office bathroom Chat Icon I guess at this point, I'll take what I can get.

Man, I wish we didn't need the money so badly, or I would have just taken the rest of the year off. Chat Icon
