Do I really need a diaper pail? - Update: I got one

That's pretty much my question...

Do I really need a diaper pail?

If I do, which should I get?

I don't want to be running diapers outside constantly and I hate poop smell (does anyone really love it?) but do diaper pails really help at all? Do I need a special one with special inserts or is this just to try to get money from me?

I read about it in Baby Bargains but I'm still not 100% convinced.

Could I get a used one from CL or is that just nasty?

It's really the last "big" thing I feel like I still need for the baby... if I even need it.

I went out and got the Diaper Champ yesterday. Our baby's room is upstairs and our room is downstairs and I definitely don't take out the garbage every day (our garbage collection is only on Tuesdays here) -- even when we take the garbage out of our home, it's in our garage... and the weather does get mighty hot here in the summer.

I've already explained to DH that he has to dump and flush the poop before wrapping up the diaper... so we'll see if that does anything to help lol. But I liked the idea of being able to use regular bags and not have to worry about refills.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone! It was one of those silly decisions that actually took a while, so it was very helpful to hear everyone's thoughts and experiences!

I registered for one, but honestly if I don't get it I think I'm just going to get a stainless steel trash can. I have a simple human one in my kitchen and it really keeps the smells inside the tin.

We have one and used it constantly!!! I didn't like the particular one we got bc I though it still smelled, we got the diaper genie, but I heard others are great at keeping the smells at bay..

diaper genie is awesome, my friends have one and when I watch their son I have so happy they had it

I had it on my registry and then took it off.

A few friends told me it was a waste and they never used then.

I have the diaper champ and I love it. If you don't completely close it after putting a diaper in it you will still smell it. But if it's closed you can't smell anything.

We have one and didn't use it for the first week. Once the poop smell kicked in we started using it and it has been great!! We have the Diaper Genie.

i just registered for those scented diaper bags which i will put the poopy diapers in and i will just take the garbage out constantly

You already know this , but I registered for a large PlanetWise Wet Bag. It's scented, can be hung up in the closet (or on a hook outside of the closet!), and can be thrown in the washer and dryer! It doesn't get any easier than that in my mind!

ETA: I'm doing cloth diapers!

Had the Graco one with DS. Was great in the beginning when we were changing 15 diapers a day. Especially nice since it used regular kitchen garbage bags.

But really, once you opened it to take change the bag it stunk.

IMO - I wouldn't waste the money. Just keep a small pail in there and empty it daily.

eta - my kitchen garbage goes out daily anyway. So I would just empty the little pail in babies room into the kitchen garbage before taking it out.

Besides, if you have multiple floors in your home and have a PNP or changing station set up elsewhere where are those diapers going?

I have a diaper genie 2.

I have it in the family room & one in his bedroom.

It really doesn't smell at all. The thing is amazing. We fill it up in a week, but it never smells.

My mom (who is going to be babysitting at her house) throws out the garbage everyday, but decided that the thing is so cool, she's going to get one.

we have been using the diaper dekor. we have one upstairs and one downstairs. We like it a lot, it holds the smell and the dog cant get into it. but... it only takes special bags which can be annoying.

A friend of ours told him the diaper genie was the best baby product he got when his daughter was born, so we registered for it as well. I know my SIL used it too and loved it with all 3 of her kids.

i love mine! it is great at 2am when u r changing diapers and have it right next to the bassinet!-you don't have to walk to the kitchen, etc.
mine doesn't smell, holds a good amount of diapers, and i am really glad that i have it! it is very convenient-get one!

I think it depends on the layout of your house. If nursery was on a different floor I would get one.


Nursery is on same floor as kitchen. I throw diapers in kitchen garbage which goes out every other day. If it smells, it goes out earlier.


I didnt get one because I didnt want to take up the space, small nursery.


now that I will have 2 in diapers, I think I might have to get one.
