I have never done this. If I absolutely needed something, I would ask.

DH has an aunt who likes to look through your closets and stuff. She will make up an excuse to open them like "Oh what room is this?" just to see what's in them. Needless to say every closet was completely cleaned out before we invited her over! Chat Icon

only if im looking for something...

Yep ... like Tylenol or something ... but most times I would just ask the host/hostess if they had any rather than going through their stuff.

However, I have a friend who decided to take a shower during someone's dinner party ... in the master bathroom (there are 4 full baths in this house) ... so I guess my common sense is not shared by all.

a shower??!?!?!! during a dinner party?!?!?!
that's so odd. wow! and shocking!! haha!

YES. Because she's insane and thinks the world revolves around her. She was depressed so she excused herself from the table, sat in the master bathtub crying and then decided to take a shower. She had no change of clothes, no towel, nothing.

Re: Do people really look in other people's cabinets?

i've never done this except in a bathroom if i'm looking for a tampon. but i don't look in a ridiculous place like a shallow wall medicine cabinet, rather, i'd look under the sink or whatever.

I only found out about this when I held a baby shower at the house I was renting. My mother said "Make sure you check what's in the medicine cabinet because people do look in there."
She joked about putting marbles in there but I said "Why would I want to embarass a guest?" Since it was empty I put an extra orchid I had in there. I thought it was amusing the only people that would see this gorgeous flowerwere the people that did open it but they couldn't mention it to anyone else.

I don't...its their business. Although I know that my medicine cabinet is usually a wreck and sometimes stuff falls out when I open it, so I make sure to clean it if I'm going to have a bunch of people over and someone might look.

I've never done it (and will never do it) except to look for TP.

My mom's house was my home so when I go there I have free reign - they're my cabinets too, in a sense.

I did go through my sister's kitchen cabinets when I was cooking dinner there last week but she didn't feel well so I was on my own.

Kind of off topic, but....
We do have a certain member of the family that steals our medications. After one of my c/s, when this family member came to see new baby, I noticed that about half of my percocets were gone. I told DH, and the next time this person was over, we left the bottle on top of the microwave and counted the pills. And sure enough, some were missing after she left. We never take anything so had quite a stock of pain pills, from dental work, my c/s, etc that we keep for emergencies. We hide them when this person comes over.

Re: Do people really look in other people's cabinets?

The first time DH's parents were over our house, we gave them the full tour. We're showing them the guest bath and Rusty's Dad asks if the mirror one the wall is also a medicine cabinet. I said yes, but there's nothing to see in there. We don't use it, so please don't open it.

I said that because the magnet on the door to keep it closed wasn't working anymore. I had crazy glued it shut because I was tired of it swinging open.

When his parents left, I went to use the guest bathroom and wouldn't you know... there's the door, swung open. Chat Icon

Considering it was CRAZY GLUED, how hard must he have pulled on that door to get it open? Chat Icon He must have been really disappointed to find that there really WAS nothing in there.

It provided us with jokes for a week, on the things we would put in there to embarrass them the next time they came over and pried the door open.

Re: Do people really look in other people's cabinets?

Same as the OP. Only my mom or FMIL, maybe a good friend to get my own glass of water, my bff for a tampon, or to replenish TP.

I never do that. I couldn't care less what you have in there.
