Turns out it was my catlyic convertor. But it was no longer under warranty.
Not sure how old your car is but the catalytic converter is covered past most standard warranties. 8 years or 80,000 miles
Oh I know...its a much longer story than the abbreviated one I gave you....I will say that VW in the end did reimbursment for the cc.
Very long story though...

yes. but that's because of DH's line of work. Before that, I would take my car to a regular mechanic if it was something not covered under a warranty.
Some warranty work will not be covered if the car was worked on by a mechanic who did not use specific parts for that car. DH has worked for both dealerships & independent stations/shops.
At the dealership, he gets continual education on the new technologies, features, and tools to fix the car-several times a year. A while back there was a new issue on his brand of cars, and a new tool was actually invented to resolve it. Only licensed XXXX shops got this tool. If a mechanic used their own tools to try & fi it, they broke a much larger, much more expensive part.
He still talks to his former co-workers at his old shop (independant) and guess who gets a call everytime they don't know how to fix his brand of car...you guessed it...DH.
I think making overgeneralizations are dangerous in any situation. Just saying.

Never have, I go to a mechanic I trust. They have mechanics that specialize in foreign cars as well.

We rarely bring our cars to the dealer...its hard to get an appointment when you want it and they usually cost more. We just go to a local mechanic for any oil changes or car issues.

neverrrrrrrrrr, we have an acura and needed "30K mile maintenance", they were charging us 700.00. instead we took it to our regular guy and he charged 200 for the same exact services.
I have an Acura also and I got a message that I need "maintainance" at the dealership. $700?? Damn!! What kind of work do they think our cars need at 17k and 30k miles???
If you remember what it was that your mechanic did that the dealer wanted to do that would be great, I will bring it to my mechanic instead.
To answer the original question, I never bring my car to the dealer for oil changes or tire issues. They are too $$$.

Re: Do you ALWAYS take your car to the dealership for repairs?
I never did with past cars but I do with my Prius, only because its unique and my old mechanic told me he didn't know enough about them.
I just say no to those fluffed up suggestions they make, I follow the booklet that came with the car and I make them stamp it everytime.

I do. It's a lease, so I would rather they be responsible for whatever they do to my car.
This past weekend I waited FOURRRRR hours for an oil change

Never. We always get the cars serviced at a shop where we know and trust the mechanic.
