I rarely do because there are loopholes in some of the plans and I never want to take time to read them when I am making the purchase. Granted, as soon as I say this, 5 people will tell me about how the protection worked for them. That always happens! Honestly, we may have bought it with the SLR camera but I don't even remember. Once in a while I break my rule.

ITA - often times the most common defect isn't covered by the plan and you have to pay to fix it anyway.

On a DSLR I would definitely buy the service plan; I bought one with mine and dropped the camera after 6 months, they completely repaired it for me (for free!). To me, if you can swing the warranty, I'd do it!

I never do. My credit card actually extends the warranty - check yours, you never know what protection you have through your CC.

Thanks for the info. I think we are going to buy it from Best Buy.

If its a one year warranty, I wouldn't. If you use your AMEX card, they automatically give you a one year warranty on any item purchased with the card.
