Do you consider

Using hand sanitizer the same as washing your hands? Like after the bathroom?

Re: Do you consider

If I think about it, in theory I consider it the same, since both kill germs and get your hands clean.

But given the choice, like if there were a sink with soap and hand sanitizer both right there, I don't think I'd choose hand sanitizer OVER soap and water. I might use both though.

No... washing your hands cleans them. Sanitizer just kills bacteria and germs. There's more on your hands than bacteria and germs.... Chat Icon

If I am in a fairly clean environment I would always choose a sink with soap and water. But I have been to places like fairs and festivals where I just used the sanitizer, figuring that the less I touched in there the better!

Agreed. Sanitizer is better than nothing, I guess, and it'll do in a pinch...but I prefer to wash my hands with (non-antibacterial) soap and water.

Re: Do you consider

I don't think they are equivalent. If given the choice I would always choose soap and water. Hand sanitizer is great if I am out and have an emergency need where I can't stop what I am doing to find a sink and wash my hands.

Re: Do you consider

I always wash my hands, then use sanitizer. Part of me thinks sanitizer is even better, because it kills 99.9% of germs instantly.

Most people don't wash their hands properly for the soap to be effective against germs.

Not at all. I hate hand sanitizer. I think it's phony and just a "masker".... I would never use sanitizer in lieu of good old soap and water.

Yes I was told the same. For soap to be effective, it must be rubbed for at least 60 seconds and with hot water. Not everyone does that.

Yup, you are supposed to sing the first verse of row row row your boat, and then rinse and that is the amount of time you need the soap on.

In answer to the question, I feel dirty if I just use sanitizer but I have done this before when there was no soap available.

I use both too...but I always wash my hands for like an hour...I never choose sanitizer over soap and water but I'll use it in addition or when there is not a sink available.

Sometimes I'll use it too just after I feel gross....for example, I sat on the subway the other day to go to lunch, didn't touch anything but still used sanitizer when I got to the table.

Side note: Has anyone tried the Purell with moisturizer in it? its awesome!

Re: Do you consider

Absolutely NOT! I am a teacher and once one of my students walked out of the bathroom and to the hand sanitizer. I asked her if she washed her hands and she said she was just going to use the hand sanitizer. I made her walk back in and wash her hands. Especially with kids, you don't know exactly what goes on in there and what might have gotten on them.

I prefer to wash my hands but if that's not possible for some reason, hand sanitizer is always my very next option! I always have a bottle on me!!

Re: Do you consider

I think of it this way - if my hands had actual garden dirt on them and I used hand sanitizer, I would just be moving the dirt around my hands, it wouldn't magically disappear, right?

I see them as two different things, each having it's own pros and cons. I'm the first one in my office and open it in the morning so I'm touching doors, handles, light switches, and and computers. That's when I use hand sanitizer when I get back to my desk.

I'm not a freak about it, but I'm the only person in my office that hasn't gotten sick in almost 2 years. Considering I work on everyone else's computers regularly, I must be doing something right to be fending off their germs!
