do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
So I just got the invitation to DH's cousin's bridal shower, so I wnt online to look at her registries. Is it just me or do you sometimes feel like people are asking for way too much? I know that a registry is partially a "wish list" but come on. They live in a one bedroom apartment and wouldn't even have the room for this stuff if they tried. It looks like they registered for every kitchen appliance imaginable, very expensive every day dishes and even a navigation system?! Since when is a navigation system a registry item?!

That wouldn't really bother me. In fact, those types of registries are usually the best for me because they give me more options. The ones that frustrate me are the ones with like 3 things on them and it's a hand can opener, whisk and an egg timer lol

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
My friend had a similiar registry and now all the boxes are piled into a corner of their bedroom until they buy a house so stupid!!! IMO a navigation system should NOT be part of a registry

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
Eh. Doesn't bug me.
Remember that there is often a registry completion program so you can buy anything that wasn't bought at a discount later. Good reason to put some stuff on that you don't really expect to receive. Like a navigation system.
ETA: My baby registry was 1 page originally. My sisters took me back to the store and sat me in a corner while they added another 14 pages worth of goods. I would have felt terrible if people thought I was being greedy..

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
I worked with someone who registered for a $1300 vase and a $425 glass kiwi bird at Bloomie's. I thought that was ballsy, but then again, they were purchased! I did think it was obnoxious when she and her FH dragged me, my DH, and our other coworker into Bloomies and showed us everything they had registered for.
So yes, I think that some people's registries can be obnoxious or go overboard.

what bugs me is people registering for an ENGAGEMENT party.. Maybe it's because I'm from a big family, so there is ALWAYS a bridal shower and baby showers (I had 2 bridal showers within the lastfew weeks and a baby shower coming up.. IT NEVER ENDS!!)

They probably have some stuff on there because after you are married a lot of stores allow you to buy things that are left on your registry at a discounted price. I know my cousin ediited her registry online 3 days before her wedding she added a tv and a sofa I doubt anyone would have bought her that at her shower.

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
I think in this case it was probably more her mother's doing then her own, which is probably why I have more of an issue with it. DH's aunt is a control freak and has pretty much planned the wedding. She's even taken it so far as to plan the bachelorette party when her sister, my SIL, and I would have been glad to plan one.

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
sometimes i think people get a little ballsy with registry items....and it does annoy me a bit. i don't mind buying some nice things for people--but when you see a list that is like 329873043 pages long with so many items--and multiples of items in different colors so they can have 1 of everything---i think it makes you look greedy.
but thats just MHO

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
I find registries very presumptuous... esp. when I have to put one together. I like the idea of a registry because I want to buy someone something they want and/or need, but for myself, when we went to register, it was very hard.

I don't let things like that bug me. I like having a variety of gifts to chose from. There are completion programs so all open items after the wedding can be purchased at a discount.
I always get a kick out of the crazy registries - one of my friends registered for like 10 suitcases, 50 cocktail/wine type glasses, 3 griddles, a table top tanner, 27 side dishes and 2 coffee cups.

I suppose it's possible for people to take liberties...I know someone who registered for couches!
It didn't bother me, but I did get a good laugh from it.

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
Yes i have seen some really ballsy registries both baby and bridal.
When i made my registry i tried so hard not to tick people off. Number one we have a house so its not like the stuff will be sitting for a long time. its a new house and i wanted new stuff.
I didnt put formal china or crystal waterford stemware, because FH's aunt gets 50% off and FH's parents are buying us our set and we will buy the rest.
So right there i thought that was great not having expensive china totaling over 5000 on my registry.
Another big ticket item like a vacuum we dont need because our house has central vac
And i really wanted All Clad pot set and a nice set can cost upwards of 900, so FH and I bought the entire set ourselves, and we just put misc all clad items on our registry that arent hundreds of dollars.

My friend did that! She expected a bunch of people would chip in and buy it (which is what happened).
lets be hoenst, the whole concept of a registry is pretty ballsy. But, we see the point and benefit of it and it has now become the norm.
As long as people are registering for things around $50-$100 also, I don't care if they register for the most expensive crystal vase in the world. Just have a variety of prices for people.

I suppose that's true, but just seeing it there on that sheet of paper amused me to pieces!

I get a good laugh of it, but it doesn't bother me. I like options, and I also think a lot of people put stuff on there just because its what they want/need, and aren't offended if they don't get it, but they like the discount!

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
my registry might have offended some people - but the truth is that DH and i had NOTHING, we were livng in his parent's house, using very old sheets and dishes, and we planned on getting an apartment, so we were in essence planning for the future. we were prepared to store things if we needed to. however, i made sure that i didn't put only the most expensive things on there. i tried to be reasonable and ask myself if i would pay that amount of $$ for a certain item.

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
Well, we initially didn't register for a lot of stuff because I didn't want a lot of stuff, but people kept complaining there wasn't enough to choose from, which made me feel like because its not like we initially registered for expensive stuff, so then I just started adding a bunch of crap onto the registry I didnt even want - the plus side? I was able to bring it to Bed Bath and Beyond for cold hard cash!!!!

Sometimes people put expensive things on there to get the discount after the event happens...BB&B and Fortunoff give incentives to buy things off of your registry at a discount after your wedding....Just a thought.

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
Yes. My friend's cousin registered at 4 places- 3 different sets of fine china (2 from a store that sells ONLY china- I forget the name)
Her "cheaper" registry was fortunoffs. That would've been my pricier registry.
I know my friend's family is comfortable- not really well off...she is planning on buying the $80 teapot.
Apparently her aunt and uncle are loaded though- so maybe this is the norm for them.
ETA: a LARGE registry doesn't bother me. It's the one's that don't have much of a price range that do- when everything is too much for 1 person to spend- unless the person is a rockefeller.
