Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
When we registered we both lived at home. When we got married we lived in a 3 bedroom apt. and had no room for anything
I did register for a 750.00 vase that my mom freaked about. She wanted me to take it off it stayed! I didn't get it but hey 10 people could have went in together and bought me that
Anyway it doesn't bother me.. No one says you have to buy from the registry

we don't have engagement parties in my family... Yes. In my experience, someone registers for their shower. I have seen people register for an engagement party and THEN for a shower (but this is going back a long time ago)
When I DO go to a friends, Of course I'll buy off their registry or give them $. In all honesty only 2 people I knew had them. ANd they were more than 7 years ago. I guess they're more common now.
a Bridal shower is a big enough deal, I dont see needing a year to clean up your registry is necessary. So you will buy something off the registry and then buy something ELSE for the shower? When you have a big family, it's too much --IMO of course. If we threw engagement parties into the mix I would have an event to go to almost EVERY month. *I* think they're frivilous.. Unless it was something casual.
but I don't judge people FOR having one. To each his own.
Its so funny how different families are. We have a small family, but even amongst my friends bridal showers are not a big deal. Its really just close friends and family in someone's home with home cooked food or bagels and spreads. I was at 1 bridal shower that was at a restaurant.
Engagement parties are much bigger with the whole extended family and are often catered or held outside the home.
ETA: I am not laughing at you. I'm laughing at how different our families' traditions are.
no worries. I realize that not everyone holds the same opinions as I, and that all families are different..

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
Registries don't bother me at all as a matter of fact I love when people register....makes it easier for me to buy a gift. I do however thing registries should have price points of all ranges....not just super pricey. However I have to say navi system, clinique products, dog food on a registry makes me go I wouldn't put those on a registry....weird IMO and I would be scared to hear the comments on that from my family.
Personally I myself feel bad about registering for super expensive stuff because I know people (i.e. DH's family) will talk smack...and anyway I would feel bad having someone buy me a $500 vaccuum etc...Id rather buy it myself but thats just me....everyone is different and to each his own.

I didn't register for 500 crystal bowls because I knew if I broke it, I would be devistated.
I don't know if it's ballsy...because there are some families that will buy the expensive items. I just think it's unnecessary.
Seriously...what do you do with a 500 dollar crystal bowl?

No, it doesnt bother me, it helps me buy a gift they really want or need. Is what registries bother me are the ones who regsiter for a birthday or anniversary...that to me is ballsy

Re: do you ever feel like a registry is ballsy?
what a lot of us forget (and please forgive me if this was addressed already) is that most stores offer a discount after the wedding on items on your registry that were not purchased - it is entirely possible that the couple registered for these expensive items and were planning on buying the items themselves after the wedding with the discount.
i know that's what i did with a few of my more expensive items i never expected anyone to buy them for me!
