Do you have a landscaper or do you care for your lawn yourself?

DH and i are arguing about whether or not to hire a landscaper to take care of our lawn or just do it ourselves. Its not a huge yard, we're on 70x100 but i think its going to be very time consuming. Thoughts and opinions?

DH takes care of our lawn/yard. He likes it - most of our neighbors do their lawns themselves too so they're always out there doing it at the same time. He likes chit-chatting.

DH does the mowing, I do the weeding and gardening. I find it relaxing and rewarding.

Why not try to do it yourselves for a month or so? You can always hire someone later if you find you don't have the time or desire.

Landscaper. I have severe outdoor allergies so I can't do it and DH doesn't want to spend his weekend working on the yard.

Landscaper

It was more cost effective for us to hire someone to do weekly yard maintenance while we focused on other projects. We also have an acre and my DH travels frequently.

DH does the mowing and regular upkeep (although he is not yet very good at weedwacking and edging, he is getting there).

We had someone come in this year to pull up some bushes, clean up flower beds, put down mulch and plant a few annuals.

Re: Do you have a landscaper or do you care for your lawn yourself?

i prefer to do it myself, although since we have been in the new house i have only mowed the backyard once.
i love it. i find it therapeutic.

our theory is do all projects/ chores that WE can do ourselves, hire people for the stuff we don't know anything about (plumbing, electric, tiling, etc...)

ETA: DH has beat me to the mowing, it's not that my lawn has only done once.

we are on the fence about it. I say landscaper DH says he will mow but I know once the weather is really nice the last thing he is going to want to do is mow the lawn.

Our lot size is the same as yours and we do it ourselves. It takes no more than an hour to mow the front and back, weedeat and edge. You are paying a good amount up front to buy all of the equiptement but it pays for itself within one season. We bought all of our stuff at Sears.

Re: Do you have a landscaper or do you care for your lawn yourself?

we have always done it ourselaves, but it is just getting out of control because we both have super busy schedules (2 jobs each) and many times weekend events prevent us from keeping the yard the way we like, so I just found a landscaper, we shall see how long i can afford it.

we do it ourselves, its really not that bad but we do need to hire a landscaper most likely just to do the grading of the property, to help get the beds installed (with soil/mulch) but after that its basically all us.

Re: Do you have a landscaper or do you care for your lawn yourself?

We are contemplating whether or not we will buy a lawnmower or hire someone once we move in June. An adequate lawn mower for our property should cost @ $300. At the minimum, landscaping would cost us over $1500 for the year.

We are by nature NOT DIYers and I honestly do not see either one of us pushing a lawn mower or clipping hedges/bushes/trees. DH also plays football every Saturday from September through January leaving only Sunday to do things around the house because I sure as hell ain't pushing a mower - I am realistic.

HE will need to decide if his only day dedicated to the family will be used puttering around the house mowing and clipping or spending time with his kids and his wife. I think $1500 is worth one years' worth of family weekend time.

Do you have a large yard? I ask because ours is not too big but it only takes my dh an hour a week to do everything. We purchased (after having the almost 20 yr. old lawnmower die last year) a new mower and it was about $300. We put it on our Sears card with no interest, no payments per month for a year. We paid it off way before the year came up but there was that option.

That's exactly what we did with our Sears card too. It was well worth it.

This is how DH and I feel. Ours is under $1500 for the year. My DH has VERY little free time. He wroks between 70-75 hours a week. He doesn't see the kids at all Mon-Fri and half of Saturday. Don't want that time he does have being spent caring for the lawn. We also have a lot of edging and flower beds.

If DH worked different hours, we probably would still have a landscaper Chat Icon I am sooooo not the type to do that, and I can't really see DH doing it either. i like to plant pretty colored flowers....that is the extent of it for me!!! Chat Icon

Amen!

We've never had a cleaning lady or a baby nurse, got our first new car ever in January, are not shoppers, but this is a MUST!

We're on 60X100, but we have a ton of trees surrounding our property. Between the itchy balls in the spring and the leaves in the fall, it is absolutely worth every penny. My DH would be out all weekend long before we hired these guys.

Re: Do you have a landscaper or do you care for your lawn yourself?

We do it ourselves. I'm going to try to set up the garden beds so that we don't need to edge at all. They have these recycled rubber strips that you can match to your mulch for edging and run one side of the mower right on top of it.

We only have a 1/4 acre too. And a lot of it is covered with planting beds, driveway, patio, walkways.

Also, any time we ever had landscapers over, we always had one problem or another. I enjoy doing it ourselves, the way we like it.
