Do you have people that show up to your house unannounced???
My IL's do this.
Yesterday they showed up, no call, DH was at work, DD was napping, and I was in the shower. Because I didn't hear the bell, they left. And I'm kind of like, well serves them right. They always do this.
How did you handle this situation? I would like at least a call before I get visitors. It's touchy because it's my IL's.

I'd make sure you say to them, "I really enjoy when you guys come over, but please let me know ahead of time with a quick call....things are a little crazy around here sometimes and I want to be prepared!"
I personally don't mind people just dropping by, I actually love it. But I know not everyone likes that.

my il do this also..the other night i was doing like a massive clothes clean up(cleaing out all my drawers and re organize) my mil walks up to my room(dh let her in, door was closed) i was in the middle of cleaning out my underwear drawer and she knocks on the door and comes in.
I can't say boo to them.

I personally don't mind people just dropping by, I actually love it. But I know not everyone likes that.
I agree. Plus I don't think you HAVE to answer your door. What if you just got out of the shower and are wrapped in a towel? Would MIL want FIL to see you that way?

If anyone were to show up un-announced, I seriously wouldn't let them in. My house, my mess  They don't need to see it.
I have told everyone all I need is 20 minutes to half and hour to make the place (or me!) presentable, I don't think that's too much to ask.

yea friends of ours live around the corner, they will drop in unannounced and see if we want to go for a walk with them or for ice cream- during nicer days- doesnt bother me
if my ils came unannounced that would bother me

YES!!!!!!!! DH's best friend. I must say it PEEVES me when he does this. He usually will come back at 10pm knocking expecting to sit his azz on our coach chat with DH, and watch tv. Ummm we have a two year old who you ALWAYS wake. CALL first please.

It happened once and it never happened again.
IL's came over when we were having company, DH asked them what they were doing here. they stayed a few minutes because the had to pick something up, then they left.
was my mil pi ssed? hell yes.
did i care? hell no.
It's the type of thing you have to nip in the bud before it becomes a problem.

Even if I imply they should call, they just don't get it.
I'm gonna try the next time I see them. But I feel like we need to hit them over the head with it. Which I don't know if I can do.

No but it wouldn't really bother me if anyone did. I guess bc back home (or I should say where I'm from) that's what people do , family , friends, neighbors, they just come by, no phone call , they just show up. It's not strange to me. It's a cultural thing I guess.

growing up, our house was the center of the family universe. there were always people just showing up. my mom stayed home, so everyone would just come by.
now, no one EVER visits me. i have a crazy dog. everyone is afraid of him, so they don't visit. i love my crazy dog

YOU shouldn't do it, your DH should.
If my ILs ever did that I'd be pizzed and make sure that DH said something to them right away (because I'm a chicken and I would not be able to myself).
Plus, I personally would think it's weird for my ILs to come over if DH isn't there... and it would be weird if my parents came over if I wasn't home.

for anyone, not just ILs
sometimes i like to look like a slob, and i don't want to see anyone
i also hate those phone calls "hey...we are in area..what are you guys up to?"
it's kinda like a manipulation tactic, in my opinion

I guess I'm in the minority but I don't mind them. I also grew up where extended family & friends would show up univited all the time.
MIL will show up univited...I would never not invite her in or pretend to not be there.

Yes, we've had unannounced visitors. I'm not a fan.
I prefer a phone call as a heads-up. Especially since everyone we know has a cell phone.

I hate unannounced drop ins! It makes me uncormfortable for some reason. Ok the reason is I'm most likely to be chillin in not made for company attire!

My inlaws live right next door (we have a mother/daughter)....I am Sooo Thankful that they respect us! Even if she needs to borrow something, she calls! If I don't answer (busy with kids or not home) she'll leave a message to please call when I have a chance!
We don't get any "drop ins"! If we did, depending on whose side of the family, we would take care of it, not to happen again.
Just don't answer the door the next time and the next time and the next time...eventually, hopefully, they'd "Get it"!

Same here. Anyone close enough to feel comfortable to drop in doesn't care about my messy house. I only do it to my siblings on occasion and if I think I am imposing I leave very quickly.
Then again, I don't have a MIL....

Me too--my parents house has always been grand central so I am so used to it and it does not phase me at all.
