Ok...Heres a what would you do..and was NOT the cause of this thread, but its gone there so Im wondering now.
I have a friend who is borderline and manic depressive.
This person has lied about their friends being killed, about being raped, about police brutality, about martial abuse..and thats just the "big" lies.
Its a chore to be friends with this person, but I do, because I feel they have a mental illness that hinders them impaired when decision making comes...BUT sometimes I wonder if when a lie comes out, it really is the illness or its a lie plain and simple and the illness is a crutch used when caught.
well with Borderline personalities LYING is a HUGE part of the diagnosis...And yes on a BIG level they aren't held as accountable.
Lies and Manipulation is key to the diagnosis... AND having Bipolar on top of that...OMG. I would accept at this point there is nothing you can do, they are sick and need professional help. It isn't a crutch at all....it is inherent in the diagnosis!
this person has had professional help since they were a child, you wouldnt know they were "sick" . But both illness' do not create distortion of reality, lying is indeed a crutch to them , its a symptom of their illness, so I wonder if some people, not just the friend, are capable of using it when needed.
I have a member at work who is bipolar and she will call sometimes and say things like her Dr. touched her inappropriatley...she knows shes lying and when you tell her to stop lying, she laughs...she needs the attention the lying brings...THAT is her symptom, the lies she consciously creates.
So again, I am wondering if anyone else would say enough is enough, or do we all feel that its justified when someone is "sick" that they may be lying, may hurt someone etc...

I've got it on both sides of the family! My uncle had a chemical imbalance. When he would go off his lithium, he would do some pretty strange things, like take off for days and no one would know where he was. It was hard for my Aunt and she would get very angry at him, but you really couldn't do anything about it until he started taking his meds again. So, yes, he was treated differently. My sister is a different story. She is Paranoid Schizophrenic and does not believe that there is anything wrong with her, so we can't get her on medication. We tried to treat her as we would anyone else, but it was nearly impossible and for our own safety and sanity, it was suggested we cut ties until she agreed to get help. No one has seen or spoken to her in almost 7 years now. MEntal illness is a horrible thing!
My foster sisters Mom is Paranoid Schizophrenic as they had to do the same thing until she got on her meds. She has disappeared for days, then years....Its horrible for all involved. But her family is an example...they hold her accounatble for ALL her actions, on meds, not on meds, and I wonder if thats right or wrong..Ijust dont know. I know its sad though

a schizophrenic CANNOT be held accountable for their actions when not on meds!

Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
With mental illness you can have pathological ilnness ( bipolar, schizophrenic) or characterological (borderline personality, antisocial personality). The characterological stuff is chronic (all the time). Lying during an active phase of a pathological illness is understandable (a part of the illness), but if it is all the time and the person is otherwise well than this is their personality. While people with personality disorders do lie, it is not "acceptable.". What I mean is they do have control over it- even though it may be hard.
I have someone in my family with a characterological disorder and I too have found it easier to keep my distance.
FM me if you have any specific questions.
Hope this helps!

Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
My father is bipolar and depression runs through both sides of my family (the expression is in different ways though). As much as people cannot be held accountable for certain actions while off meds or prior to diagnosis, it doesn't mean that these same actions don't affect the relationship. I have no contact with my father, as do two of my sibilings. The other two go back and forth.

I have to disagree....when a borderline or anyone with a mood disorder is NOT on meds...their behavior is near to impossible to have control over.

most definitely!!!!! Any kind of mental illness has a profound effect whether the person is on meds or not. I feel for the family members that deal with it. It is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY difficult.

Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
I think where I would draw the line would depnd on how far the person can control it, or is trying to control it. You have to be understadning if lying, violence, etc are symptoms of the disease, you have to give slack. It's like falting somsone for sneezing..but then again if someone sneezes all over you and doens't get a tissue or take some penicillin, I think that's a different story too. I've seen a lot of people with mental illness and there are the people who struggle to live normal lives, and who try not to alienate their families and really do the best they can, and I've seen people use it as an excuse to say whatever they way, do whatever they want and hide behind it to not deal with the consequences. So to me it's about the severity of the illness, how much of the behavior can be attributed to the illness and how much the person is or is not trying to be a good friend/relative/person despite the engative effects of the illness.

Yes. We kind of just roll our eyes and ignore him because he has schizophrenia but will NOT see a doctor and just acts so mean and inappropriate to all of us in the family.

I'm not an expert on this, but I'm sure it can be linked to a broader disorder like OCD or a disorder that involves a level of paranoia. or some people may just be hypochondriacs with no other symptoms of another disorder. This isn't a professional opinion, but hypochondria seems to just be a really focused kind of anxiety, sort of like a phobia or some of the obsessions involved in OCD. Someone's just channelling all of their anxiety into matters of health.

NO actually OCD is completely different than hypocondriasis. Fear is involved in it, a fear of disease based on a misinterpretation of symptoms but not anxiety.

Ok because for some reason I thought it coincided with a mental illness .. Now is hyperchondria also connected with the desperate need for attention?

Hypocondriasis is a disorder! It is in the DSM
ETA..people who do it for attention aren't hypocondriacs they have another disoder called Munchausen (sp? sorry i am too lazy to break out the dictionary)

Is Bipolar disorder something that just happens or are there signs? I just don't understand how they did not see this before? He's only 19.

Don't fear and anxiety have the same root? I always thought hypochondria was an anxiety related illness. With OCD you're channelling your excess anxiety/fear into, you know, closing the door 33 times, with hypochondria you're channeling it into worrying about health. It's more complicated that, but doesn't it all come back to the same thing? (I don't have formal training in this, so I'm just asking). Also, do they relate hypochondria to paranoia at all, because to me they also seem related? Hypochondria is one disorder I'm fortunate to not know anyone with, but I just feel like most mental illnesses are interrelated, with very similar causes just different expressions in different people based on their predisposition. That's why I say i have mental illness on both sides of the family, they don't all have the same illness though, some had panic disorder, some bipolar, some schizophrenic, many clearly mentally ill but never diagnosed. Do they find that hypochondria is related to serotonin? Because I know that for panic and anxiety disorders as well as for depression, OCD etc they give SSRI's, and they also show up with more than one in the same person, so they're considered interrealted. Do they say hypochondria is the same or not part of this group of itnerrelated illnesses?

I don't know specifically about bipolar disorder but I know a lot of disorders don't even show up until late teens/early 20's in a lot of cases. I know with one of FH's family members they really didn't diagnose it until her early 20's and I don't she really showed a lot of signs before that

attention seeking can be associated with lots of things. But when it is associated with illness it can be munchausen. But with Munchausen they usually actually hurt themselves to get such attention.

Most bipolar patients are diagnosed in the late teens-twenties.yes.

No...hypocrondraisis is not apart of the anxiety disorders...it is of the Somatoform Disorders...
Hypocondraisis is the preoccupation with illnesses.. and the fear of getting illnesses which is why theya re going to doctors all the time. This preoccupations will continue even tough a doctor says they are healthy. This often will cause the person to be significantly distressed ...so much that is effects their work and social lives
ETA... no i don't think most mental illnesses are related some how...or even manifested from common areas...

With my sisters illness, we really didn't know for sure until she was in her early 30's. Now looking back, she certainly showed signs of it in her mid 20's. We finally had an intervention with her and that set her off. She hated every one of us after that. We couldn't suggest any type of therepy or medication with her.
