Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
Thanks.
While we're on the subject I was looking up some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder. I don't think this is the only issue at hand, but FSIL was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Would bipolar disorder ever cause someone to really act out in a mean and negative way? Like she says things that are really inappropruate at an inappropriate time, expressing anger whenever she feels like it. I don't know if you saw my posts about ehr screaming at FH and cursing at a cemetary during a prayer service. it was completely out of line. We attributed some of it to her mental illness, but I don't know. I don't know a ton aout bipolar disorder but when they describe periods of mania when people say things they really shouldn't say or they do something really outside of the realm of what's socially acceptable because they feel they are on top of the world, ir doens't seem to make sense that this would be acting out in anger? I don't know how to express what I mean. Would this be a symptom of bi-plar disorder? I know mania doesn't really mean you're happy, and it can lead to destructive behavior, but would it lead someone to act especially belligerent? It seems sort of out of line because the mania is supposed to be an "up" time. Would being in the depression part of it cause someone to act out? I don't know I'm thinking about our earlier parts of the thread and how much to give somsoen slack for an illness and when to draw the line
ETA: I was just reaidng abut the difference ebtween mania and hypomania, so I get it now, that mania can cause rage, etc.

Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
I was recently reading an article about teenagers who were diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and ended up killing someone. It was such a terrible article. I keep thinking about my pastor's son and it's scary.

it is sad....Bipolar Disorder can manifest behaviors that are very extreme. Aggression and agitation is one of them. They can also swing to the deep extreme of self loathing causing suicide! It is a terrible disease!

It really is. But at least he didn't commit suicide and he's alive, and as long as he's alive there's definitely hope. My FSIL who is bipolar, I cant stand her, I think she's an evil person, but she has 2 kids and she manages to be a great mom, so there's definitely hope of a productive life.
it's all such uncharted territuroy especially with teens. I've read a lot of articles about teens who take medications for depression often end up killing themselves because the meds have the opposite effect. I've also seen people mess themselves up a LOT more by self medicating and going on and off and on and off medication. You could just have a moderate or minor kind of depression, take medication, start doing great, then if you stop taking your meds one day, you can immediately get worse than you ever were and commit suicide. So it's not joking matter. it's especially hard because if somsone is mentally ill to begin with, they're not the kind of peopel you can trust to take their meds every day and take them appropriately, so it's just a really scary thing that needs to be taken seriously.

As in someone close, like a family member or friend? And do you feel like you give them more "chances" when they do something wrong or try to put their behavior into prespective or treat them the same way as everyone else?
Maybe they lie to you for a reason ??? Did you ever look at why someone would lie to you ?

Then try taking care of it now. So that it never escalates into anything that you will be forced to deal with once it has disturbed other areas of your life!

Re: Do you know anyone with a mental illness/disorder?
yes! Definitely take care of it before it becomes a problem. Not to scare you but most of the people I know wth serious mental conditions started out with what i would call garden variety anxiety or depression. Mental Illness is defintiely something that can escalate. So just get it checked out before it becomes a problem.

No..because I was wondering only about people who lie who have mental disorders not the normal person who lies...
Also hypochiandria does usually coincide with other "anxiety" disorders.
The stats will show almost all people with hypochiandria have some form of social/anxity disorder whether it be minor or major. The underlying anxiety usually creates the hypochandria traits.
The person needs the hypochiandria to focus on something "other" then the anxiety or to focus soley on something not real. They typically dont do it for attention but as an escape..

ps- attention seeking is a MAJOR symptom of borderline personality disorder, which is very difficult to deal with for loved ones. I always recommend this book and families have raved about it: I hate you dont leave me, sorry forgot the author.

YES but it is also comorbid with a LOT of other disorders not just anxiety. BUT they are different and anxiety is not apart of diagnosis.
"The person needs the hypochiandria to focus on something "other" then the anxiety or to focus soley on something not real.

that is NOT necessarily true either. There are tooo many theories to say that...
SOME even say that hypochondriasis is a patients defense against guilt and shame, low self-esteem and a narcissistic over indulgence with one's self.
It isn't a means for escape but rather control!

It it as true as the other theories actually. I dont wanna debate psychology with you , wasnt the intent of my thread..but I know the stats, and didnt make them up.
Just like you, psychology is what I know a LOT about.
This leads me to another question- Does anyone know a hypochiandriac...and do they annoy you with their constant worries?
I am for sure this way, but not clinically because I know when someone tells me its not a brian tumor, it really isisnt...but some cant see past the cloud and to reality. I dont know any, but I could imagine it getting very very crazy and stressful for the family members , friends....

Didn't say you made up the "stats"... Just said that it IS comorbid with MANY other disorders...NOT just anxiety, which is true
AND YES....i do know of a hypochondriac who is out of control and yes it gets frustrating..but they only hurt themselves...because it is sooo obvious. I just try to listen.
