When I was little I didn't know much past Easter or Christmas. I don't think I was expected to absorb the true meanings of other religions as I was becoming indoctrinated in my own. As an adult who lives in a pretty diverse place, it is my responsibility to educate myself. If I don't know something, I ask questions.
Last year (or perhaps the year before - can't remember) I had asked why the Ten Commandments was played around Easter and not Passover as to ME, it was CLEARLY the story of MY faith. I was nicely schooled and learned how that story plays a big part of the Catholic faith.
I like learning about other cultures an religions. Do I know everything? Hardly. I also do not expect that people who are not of my faith, to know that there are MANY more holy days than Chanukah to the Jewish people - like Sukkot, Simchat Torah and Shavuot etc.
ITA with all of this since I was also only aware of Easter and Christmas as a young child.
I did not know what Ash Wednesday was until I was in law school-I went to an Orthodox Temple, Jewish sleepaway camp-even though I went to public school. it was never mentioned.
I also ask questions of my friends who are of different faiths and that is how I learn. And I appreciate equally questions about the Jewish faith. I agree that there are many very significant holidays that people who aren't Jewish don't know about, just as there are many significant holidays in other faiths that I try to educate myself about.

I'm pretty familiar with the major Jewish holidays and some of the minor ones, due to my clientele. Also, am aware of some Muslim holidays as well. And of course those of my Pagan ancestors, LOL!

I can't imagine being an adult and not knowing a LITTLE bit about major holidays.
Even before I was with a Jewish man I still knew something about the basic Jewish holidays. I know Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, and I knew Passover and Hanukkah. I'm sure I would have had no clue what Purim was, or Sukkot.
I know some of the basic Muslim holidays though i really should know a lot more considering my lifelong bst friend is Muslim.
I still don't know what the holiday is in the fall when the Indian (I think) families put candles out on their porches. I don't know if it's a religious or ethnic holiday since some of the kids I teach in CCD also do it.

I am not religious but I know different holidays from religions.
However, I will NEVER be able to remember--between Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur--which one is sad and which is happy.

Re: Do you know many other religious holidays that are not of your religion?
To be honest, I grew up Protestant and never saw anyone with ashes until college. I guess people just didn't do it in my town I grew up in or I was oblivious to it?
When I first saw it in college, at first I thought the person's head was dirty, luckily before I said anything, I realized it was ash wed and put 2 and 2 together.
Maybe this person just really didn't know? I doubt they meant anything bad about the comment.
I do know of the other major religious holidays, but I don't really know too much about their traditions that go along with it but I would always be open to learning about it, it is interesting to me.
