Do you let your 3-4 year old pick their Halloween costume?

I bought DS (3) both fire & policeman costumes for his birthday a few weeks ago thinking he'd be one or the other for Halloween, but no. After seeing it in my Parents magazine, he wants to be a mushroom! He even told me he'd help me make his costume, so how could I say no? Chat Icon

What do you do?

DS (4.5) wanted to be a white ninja but the costum looked a bit, offensive, so we decided to be something else. Turns out it was a star wars guy.

Last year he (3.5)wanted to be bumblebeee/transformer.

Within reason, yes I let my kids pick out their costumes. I have a price limit and final veto, but if it is age appropriate, and not inappropriate (gross/violent/obscene/too revealing) then I am fine with it.

AJ wanted to be cinderella then I steered her to jasmine and after that I made her choose one and only one.

She chose jasmine.

Of course that was over a month and a half ago.

Now she wants to be a superhero (again - she was ms captain america last year). Chat Icon

sorry kiddo you WILL be jasmine cause mama spent a lot of money on it

She's 4

ETA: i didn't exactly say no.. i just glossed over it. She was determined she wanted to be a super hero but I just let it slide. Come halloween (another month away pretty much) who knows what she'll say.. just know I'm not spending anymore money (because I can't).

OMG Amanda that's a great idea! Lol

I'm actually ok with his being a mushroom (I can't even type it without laughing lol), but I'm sooooo not crafty! I figure white pants & turtleneck will do, but our attempts at a mushroom hat are pretty bad. He lovessss the hat though, so I'm just going to keep working on it. We'll see lol

I try to figure out what they want to be...but I do steer them towards something else if I can't either make it easily or purchase it fairly cheap.

Yes I do. Why didn't you ask them first? That's what I do. My kids have been picking their own costumes since before they were 2 - otherwise what's the fun of it for them if I tell them what they have to be?

For a mushroom you could do white pants, and cut holes in a gray/beige/brown pillow case for arms. Stuff the pillow case with padding and then tie around the waist to make a bulge. Put felt white circles on the pillow case for it's spots-they make sticky one sided felt.

It looks good in my mind at least. lol!

Yes, kind of. We gave him a few choices, and let him pick. He likes them all, but doesn't want to actually wear any.

Yes. In fact, she has picked her costumes since age 2. She was VERY firm on her choices too. At age two she was Minnie, age three she was Ariel, and this year she is Merida from Brave. At least she is making nice choices. Chat Icon

I honestly just didn't think to ask him lol He was getting the police & fireman suits anyway so it doesn't matter - he plays with them a lot so I just assumed he'd want to be one of them. I love that he wants to be a mushroom - it's so random & so cute Chat Icon

dont feel bad.
I asked Julia...she wanted to be snow white, awesome.... we have that outfit already.

we go into store, she seems minnie mouse costume, loves it, wants it. Ok, we buy it.

On the way out, she sees a cowgirl hat. I buy that because she has been asking for a cowgirl hat for a while.

So while I let her pick, her mind changes a couple times a day.

I bet she wants to be snow white on halloween ( the original, free plan). Chat Icon

Probably! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Since he's always playing in his police & fireman costumes I thought for sure he'd be wavering between the two that's why I was so surprised he wanted to be something else Chat Icon

My kids pick out their own costumes, but I try to make sure they coordinate. This year they're Batman and Catwoman so it works.
