Do you like living on Long Island?
Spinoff to the unpopular opinions topic. Just wondering what peoples' thoughts are on LI.
For me and DW, we don't despise it, but there's very little holding us here. I think once DC go to college, it will be very easy to move somewhere else.

I feel like all the bad things with LI are the same in Westchester or any other suburb of NYC. It's crowded and expensive. I'd rather be in Westchester because that's where my side of the family is. But, my husband's job is on LI, so that's where we ended up. I feel like you just can't "get off the Island". You have to leave the entire NYC metro area, IMO.

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
Hate it!
Traffic is insane and that's because of.... Over crowding they keep building and building until we get choked out. Weather is god freaking awful Taxes Price of houses is ridiculous for what you get Old infrastructure Depressing And the beaches- I know everyone raves about them- i think they are gross. Freezing cold water, brown water, dirty. I feel like the people who think LI has the best beaches have never seen a beach in Florida. There is NO comparison

Yes - I love it, although I think I could be happy living in a lot of places. I think NY and Boston are perfect because you can live near a city, close to skiing in the winter and close to beach in the summer. We also have great schools here.
I think when my kids are older and I have more flexibility I would rather live somewhere a little further south where the weather is warmer but for now this is great.

YES!!!! It's not a Long Island thing - it's a NY area thing. Anyone within a certain radius of NYC is going to have the same problems. I actually think traffic and COL is worse in Westchester. And the problems we have are similar to almost every major city in the US. There is a price you have to pay to live near a city.

GET ME OFF THIS ISLAND!!
Honestly, while there are some nice things about the island the fact that we're SO overpopulated and trafficked makes it so it just doesn't matter what LI offers. You can't get anywhere or enjoy anything. Events draw thousands, the farms, beaches and wineries are OVERRUN. Rush hour lasts ALL DAY in BOTH directions. It's really gotten to be miserable over the last 20 years. I feel like we're trapped on this island, due to traffic, and can never get away even we when want to.
I want space. I want less traffic. I want to be able to enjoy what is around me without fighting off insane crowds. I am really done at this point. Cannot wait to pack up and go!
ETA - I love fall and winter so the weather doesn't phase me, I LOVE New England, that is where I want to end up.

I don't like being near a city, I don't like skiing, and I'm not a fan of LI beaches...
I like woods and mountains. Definitely no mountains here, and minimal woods. I would love to buy 100+ acres of woods, with a pond or stream or something, in the PA, VA, NC region. A bit farther south, but not too much.

I tihnk I posted about this a while back. You can't enjoy anything. Want to see fireworks on July 4th- better get there at 8 am to get a spot and plan on 3 hours to get out. Want to go to the air show at Jones Beach?- same Want to go pumpkin pick in the fall, forget it. Wineries- nope Even the city- see the tree for Christmas at Rockerfeller- you can't even walk.
On and want to go on a nice family trip to the Jersey Shore, the Poconos, Hershey Park, whatever- you have to leave at 5 am just to hit LESS traffic- you still hit plenty but at least it won't take 7 hours to do a 3 hour drive. Makes me not want to go anywhere that we have to drive to
I'm getting anxious just thinking about it.
it's sad that it sucks the fun out of everything. I don't want to go anywhere- i just want to stay in my house and hide

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
I voted that I love it. I really love living here. The cost of living is insane though, along with the traffic and overpopulation. I think we will end up moving eventually. I know if our kids start school here, it will be harder to leave. Leaving our family would be hard too. I always go back and forth.
I've never visited somewhere I love though. I don't know where we would even go if we decided to move. If we move somewhere cheaper, everyone says the schools aren't great. So, then would we be paying for private school? In that case, how much cheaper than LI would it really be?

Do you like living on Long Island?
My husband is the LI native who dragged me onto the island. I don't mind it, but I'd love to leave it. He loves being near family, and in his profession, he would take a HUGE pay cut living somewhere else (unless it was another major metropolitan area). Unfortunately, the pay cut is not proportionate to the lower cost of living else where. He's looked into jobs near my family, and it's less than a third of what he makes here, so we're stuck here until retirement.
I hate all the people. I despise all the money I spend just to exist. I feel stressed driving because there are so many idiots on the road in close proximity. I hate the beach. I hate going anywhere because there are too many people everywhere. I hate that I hate to go over a bridge to get off the damn island (and pay for the privilege to leave).
The only positive is that I know my kids will have tons of opportunities here, but then I worry they'll be privileged assholes like the ones I deal with every day.

YES!! ITA!! This is my major complaint, you really cannot enjoy a damn thing here. Like you, I'm at the point where we don't even try anymore, we just prefer to stay home. Even just going to Pt Jeff on a nice day means you're driving around for 45 min just to find a spot. It's ridiculous.
We go up to New England a lot and granted, right outside of Boston is a different story but there are parts of CT, MA, NH, etc. that are a little more affordable, rural and spread out and it's AMAZING. Not only is the landscape just gorgeous in comparison to here (mountains, rivers, woods, open space) but you can actually do things without fighting thousands of people trying to do the same. We've walked int a restaurant on a Sunday morning for breakfast and were seated RIGHT AWAY! That is unheard of on the island.
Not to mention, while New England isn't a cost savings like going south there are some REALLY gorgeous areas that absolutely have lower taxes and where you get SO much more for your money. You might still spend $500-600K on a house BUT that house is sitting on 2+ acres, it's over 3500 sq feet and it's a gorgeous home. Plus, their schools rank just as well as LI if not even BETTER in some places.
LI has just changed A LOT and it's not going to get any better, only worse. The population will continue to grow, the traffic will worsen and it will be a continual headache. I feel like I am ALWAYS aggravated when I am out and about here. When I'm off the island, I notice a distinct change in my attitude, stress and overall personality. I can't wait to leave.............for good!

I like Long Island, there is a lot to do and my family is here. BUT, It's so expensive to live here. I can't deal with the traffic anymore.
DH and I took a trip to visit SC to see if we like it there to relocate, and we do. We'll go back a few more times to get a better feel, but we are seriously considering it. Our retirement monies will go a lot further.
Will I miss LI, probably, but I can live better in SC.

Do you like living on Long Island?
Love it! There's so much here - great beaches, close enough to the city, close enough to skiing, great museums and all kinds of cultural opportunities, Broadway, access to great medical care. I could see myself living somewhere else, eventually, but definitely not somewhere rural and not somewhere colder than NY

I don't hate or love it.
There are plenty of other places in the country I would probably be much happier living. But our family here is what keeps us (and DH's job) so I'll never leave.
With that said, there are a few redeeming things about LI, like the beaches, the north shore, adorable small towns, and proximity to NYC. These are not unique to LI, but they do help make it bearable and even sometimes enjoyable to live here.

I am from LI, but have lived in westchester for 18 years. ther are a lot of the same issues, but I like being attached to the main land.
It does make it a little easier to travel to places north of us, so it is good if like woods & hiking ( going over the GWB to NJ/PA is still a PIA) but you are further from the beach.
I also just prefer it psycholgically (weird, I know) I don't feel trapped on a island. I don't really find it as over crowded here either, but maybe we jsut go unpopular places at unpopular times.
I do like being near NYC though-the only reason I would move back to LI would be to be closer to my family. Or maybe if we were biuying a house.
I feel like there are more middle of the road places ion LI, (not that it is a bargain compared to the rest of the country.)

Do you like living on Long Island?
Get me off this island. It's dirty, people are unfriendly and mean, and I'm sick of working just to get by. My taxes are $10k for a house thats only about 1500 sq feet (and I think I'm being generous with the size). My friend just moved to NC and bought a gorgeous house three times the sizes and her taxes are ...... $800

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
I lived on LI for 19 years due to unforeseen circumstances I moved back upstate. Moving back made me realize how incredibly unhappy I was all those years. I like that I can still visit, but I can honestly say I'm a lot happier not living on the Island.
DS who is 9 is also a lot happier up here.

Do you like living on Long Island?
I was the one with the original “unpopular” opinion of detesting LI so there’s my answer.
I can only speak to where I live on the south shore, I find it to be a very insular, close minded, ignorant place. Very unworldly and unaccepting of others. Lots of racism out in the open. Completely inconsiderate- I’ve seen fights break out in stores, parks. N bombs dropped all the time in public. I fear what our experience would be if DH and I weren’t white and toting around a blonde haired, blue eyed child. Not exactly the type of people I want to raise my child around.

I think you're right. I live pretty far east and I love it (except for the cost of living). When we visit family in western suffolk, people are downright nasty. Going shopping in certain towns gives me such anxiety because everytime I do, there are people about to fist fight over the stupidest stuff. I had a friend visiting from NC, we dropped off my kids at my in-laws and went shopping. On the way, there was a guy with road rage that confronted another driver at a red light, then the second we got into the store, there was someone screaming profanities at the cashier over what seemed to be an expired coupon. Like absolutely no shame. My friend was terrified and it was mortifying for me because now she thinks I live in a terrible place.
I don't want to say it never happens out east, but I would rather take the drive to the outlets in Riverhead than head anywhere west. It seems like people are a little more easy going out this way.

ITA. I grew up in Queens and LI is different. I don't like one better than the other- each has it's own benefits and downfalls. I do like that I have more space on LI. I hated living in an attached house on both sides with no driveway and a patch of concrete in a seedy alleyway to call a backyard. I don't love the traffic or the taxes here, but it's a give and take.
But the same can be said for us- DH's job and all of our family are here and we're not going anywhere.

I think it’s sad that everyone is so unhappy here. I think if I was that miserable, I would leave! Life is way too short. My sister hated it here...job hunted for 2 years until she found something out of state and never looked back!

I would but I don't want to leave my family, my DH has a father who is not well and in need of a lot of help and he is the only one who helps him out in the family. Plus my DD is entrenched in school and I don't want to rip her away from her friends- that would gut me. So it's not always that easy as job hunting and leaving. But once she's out of school we are gone. If I am still at this job I am sure I can work from anywhere in the country so that won't be an issue.

That's exactly what we're trying to do! As soon as my DH finds the right job, we're outta here.
