Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
No, I really don't. I'm from the Mid West and we moved here when my son was an infant. He is 19 now. I think it's a generally unfriendly place, and I can't stand trying to get off this island with the traffic. I think the cost of living sucks, and the schools are overcrowded and mediocre despite what people in my community say. I feel stuck in NY though since my son has special needs, and I've worked hard to get him approved for certain services. I hate that I would have to start over somewhere else. I want to live in a cute small town...a Gilmore Girls type town

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
When we were first leaving Brooklyn, we tried to move to LI. The neighborhoods we could afford to live in seemed so crowded it was frustrating so after a few weeks we gave up looking. I live surrounded by woods now which I NEVER thought I would do but we're happy. If we could not be tied to the city for work, we would move to the Outer Banks.

Do you like living on Long Island?
As I get older I hate it more. Dh’s Job is the only thing that keeps us here. It’s great pay and he loves it. If they offered him a transfer elsewhere we would take it as long as we could find a good school for my kids. Every time we go on vacation it’s like a breath of fresh air. I’m done with the traffic, the congestion, the entitlement, the racism, and the list goes on and on. I like where we live right now and my dd is getting a good education but if we stay we are running the Minute my girls graduate.

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
It’s funny to see this post because just an hour ago I was crying with tears of happiness about how happy I am that we moved off LI. How much better quality of life is off LI.... No crowds, you can enjoy day to day activities, people are nice but not obnoxiously nice, cost of living is more reasonable, I really could go on forever, aaaaaand I’m crying again lol. I am just so happy we made the move. It was by far the best decision I have ever made and I love the childhod my kids will have.
If anyone is on the fence about moving please do. We uprooted our family and left with no help. I have never met anyone that regretted it.

No, I hate it, but we both have state jobs with pensions and our families are here. We are here until we can retire, after that wherever my kids are we will go or someplace between them if they are spread out. People here are rude, self centered, drugs are a huge issue here, it’s so crowded you can’t move, not to mention col

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
I thought I was the only one. Lately I am feeling more and more negative about living here and knowing there is a whole world out there. I echo what so many said. The taxes are so awful. I pay so much for a small house on a small piece of property. Just doing a day trip, it’s either out east or Nyc. I feel stuck as the traffic makes it impossible. In other areas, you can take little trips all over. I have been complaining about it more and more lately.

Do you like living on Long Island?
Geographically, I love it!
I love the natural elements. I love beaches, the parks, the variety of land. I love the proximity to the city or mountains. I love the food. The art. The choices.
I don't love how greedy developers are. Enough building!!!!!!. Greedy sobs! I don't love the antiquated highways not the traffic. I don't love the arctic or humidity

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
Soooo I’m an oddball. Born and raised in Queens, owned a house there and whatnot. Never ever wanted to leave the five boroughs.
But then DH and I got tired of homeownership and everything involved with owning a home that was 100 years old. We freakin knew the people at Home Depot by name. It was a lot to maintain and an awful lot of space for two people and two cats, with no plans or want for children.
So, we decided to sell the house and buy an apartment. And we thought we’d buy somewhere in Queens or Brooklyn - had an offer out on an apartment we loved and there was no traction. On a whim, we looked at an apartment in Great Neck - I was pretty much kicking and screaming the whole way to the open house. Did NOT want to leave the boroughs. I’m too rough around the edges. But then we saw the apartment, along with some others, and fell in love with the apartment and the town - and a 22 minute commute to Penn, not having to deal with going through Jamaica, was sweet.
So we did it. Sold the house, bought this awesome pre-war apartment in a gorgeous building and haven’t looked back. We’re like ten minutes from Queens so I am appeased by being close to what I know. But we love the neighborhood, proximity to the city, commute to work, amenities for residents of the town, etc etc etc.
I really love where we live, but it doesn’t feel like Long Island at all. So that’s probably why I love it. Because further east would make me feel like I was suffocating.

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
I like it here because all of my family are here however, I really feel like I am going to be taxed out of my house. I just got a letter that my taxes are most likely going to raise a lot.
I can't go anywhere yet because my husband can't retire just yet. However I would love to move somewhere where the cost of living is cheaper and the winters aren't as harsh.

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
Get me off this island.
I am tired of living paycheck to paycheck just to afford to live. I am a teacher and any "free time" I have is taken up with tutoring or odd jobs just to make ends meet. I am sick to death of all the people and the traffic and the falling-apart infrastructure. There are beaches along every coast, and I hate the city. My taxes on my teeny tiny little house that was built in the 1940's are almost $10,000 a year and for what? I cannot get out of my neighborhood because of all the traffic, the potholes on the LIE could swallow a tractor trailer.
Once my youngest graduates high school, I am running and never looking back.

I think it’s sad that everyone is so unhappy here. I think if I was that miserable, I would leave! Life is way too short. My sister hated it here...job hunted for 2 years until she found something out of state and never looked back!
Once I retire, we are out of here. I do like earning NYC money.

Do you like living on Long Island?
lived on LI for 28 years. never knew any different until 12 years ago when I moved to CT. And now I hate going back. the traffic has increases so much over the years and it's almost impossible to drive back there. While house prices are no different taxes are bit lower and we have over an acre of land. I know CT has it own problems as of recent, but I can't imagine ever going back to LI. We are 1 1/2 hr away on a good day. I'll take it lol. I met so many from LI Here, I find it funny but it's not that far.

Do you like living on Long Island?
I couldn’t wait to get off the island... came from the city originally and lived on the island for the past 10 years. The one thing I hated about LI was the rudeness and fake people. Yes, I’ve met some great friends there, but my god, the majority were miserable... and I can understand why. You are working your ass to afford a home that is just EH and taxes through the roof. Not to mention sitting in traffic all day every day can make a person bitter as hell. I get it. And that’s why we moved to N.C. 4 months ago. My god, what a difference already! The people are so pleasant. Literally go out of their way to help you. There’s no flipping the bird, honking is unheard of. Hardly anyone to drive up your ass. My daughter’s school is simply amazing. No Mom cat fights. No pta takeovers. The only thing NY has going for it is it’s food. But Everything else trumps that. If anyone here has the chance to leave, do it! But leave the attitude at the door because it’s not welcome down here

Do you like living on Long Island?
I Loathe Long Island. I am originally from Brooklyn so i do have a love hate relationship with NY in general but i do like the boroughs better than LI. Reasons i hate it: The houses are too expensive for what you get. Alot of everything on Long Island is way too expensive. Many people here are rude and there is alot of racism. You have to pay a boat load for nursery or pre-k. You have to drive everywhere here cause the trains and buses suck. Because alot of people drive = terrible traffic The beaches and parks are not as fabulous as people make them to be.
I am only here because my husband is born here and his work is here so he can't leave but if i had a chance i would in a heartbeat.

I am mixed om the racism thing because i think when you leave LI (as a person of color) and go to other parts of the country you wish you were back on LI/NYC lol

LI is an interesting place in terms of race/segregation. All the towns are more or less segregated by race due to laws established in the 1950s. I moved upstate and school districts are a lot more diverse from a racial and economic standpoint.

Do you like living on Long Island?
I no longer live on LI. The only thing I miss about LI is proximity to friends and family, the beach, and the city. Now that my son is getting older, I would like to start taking more day trips into the city as we are only 2.5-3 hours away and can take the bus in for a day trip if we want.
I do not miss the "keeping up with joneses" mentality or the traffic.

this, we live in N Queens, grew up here, I went away to college and lived upstate and I like that lifestyle but my home is where my family is and all of our parents and siblings are here so here is where we will stay. We would love to have a home somewhere warm in the future, a second home, my parents do and we love going there a few times a year but honestly I could not be happy living that far from family regardless of how nice the "lifestyle" would be. Heck I won't even move to Nassau lol

Re: Do you like living on Long Island?
We moved a year ago. DH is the native LIer. While I liked where we lived in theory, the stress of our jobs and commute, just making enough to get by, no help from family, not wanting to do things because of crowds traffic and money, these things kept me unhappy. I tried my best to focus on the positive things but it doesn't work after so many years. After we both looked for jobs on the island and came up with nothing, we moved out of state. Our lives are better now.

I guess it all depends on where you go. I look at my kids class pictures and the racial diversity is huge compared to their LI school.
