Do you live for the future or for the day?
Such as saving money for an example?
I know we live ( me and DH) very much for the day...and we may be sorry one day, but for now, it suits us.
Im not one of those people to say, Oh I'll buy that another time, or SOMEDAY I will cut my hair short etc...
It surprises me how many people do though, not live in the moment.

DEFINITELY live for our future....We want certain things ASAP that require saving...
Living for the day IMO gives you temporary hapiness. We want more than little pleasures! We are willing to wait for the bigger pleasures!

Re: Do you live for the future or for the day?
we're a combo of both....we go through these spurts, where we buy a bunch of stuff we've been wanting, but normally we save, especially with a little one on the way.
I'd have to say we're pretty good....I just bought a pair of shoes I LOVE off Ebay. I promised DH with this paycheck, we'd get him the weed whacker he's been wanting.
Other than that, it's stuff we need, like new underwear, socks, a book or CD or DVD.

I'm like you, I live for the present because it's what I can control but at the same time it's hard to save when only one person works and there is no money left. that should change since I'm going back to work.

I am not looking to be rich....And if i bought silly things for myself everyday and then died....that wouldn't make me dying happy.
MY idea of happiness is more than buying an ipod or a coach bag or going on trips...
AND if i died before my goals were reached i would still know that in my heart my DH and i wanted the best for each other and were willing to sacrific the now for the later.

Re: Do you live for the future or for the day?
ehhh we have a pretty decent savings, But were not strict about "saving". I'd much rather be happy than just saving like crazy for something that (god forbid) you might not ever be able to enjoy. We limit ourselves sometimes- like we dont buy every single thing that we see and want, but at the same time we dont completely neglect ourselves from the little luxuries. I think part of it too was that we Always had something more important than ourselves that we needed to save/pay for, and now that the wedding is over, and we're not jumping into the real estate frenzy right away, we're just enjoying that feeling of not having anything hanging over our heads

I didnt say YOU were looking to be rich...And I dont think I meant buying "silly" things would make me die happy, but I know some people who hate their hair for instance, but will not get it cut because it costs too much..for me that silly..I would want to die looking good.. Little things like that amaze me I guess...
My idea of happiness is really not based on money at all, but I know a new coach bag makes me happier then money in the bank..But again I wasnt talking about living outside your means, just whether you permit yourself to live in the now or like to think more about the future.
Money was just an example of what I meant. Because it does come down to money for a lot of people..
Like People who dont date at a certain point because they are on a "career track". I always think, wow ...they are missing out on love or fun times in "hopes" of something better when time is running out...

I know you didn't say that...I was reacting to your response "i'd rather die happy than die rich"....Which was in response to me.
Me living for the future has nothign to do with being rich. I agree happiness is MUCH MORE than money. For me it will be the joy of living in my home raising my kids and living life. That is my ultimate goal. Money is always involved if you are living for the day or for the future....It partly a means to happiness.

Re: Do you live for the future or for the day?
I actually found an article in a doctor's office that I found interesting. A couple had a huge amount of debt with an income of $40.000. It took them 4 years but they are now completely debt free. If they see something that they want they ask themselves 2 questions: 1 - Why do we need it? 2 - How have we lived so long without it?
These are the two questions I ask DH everytime he wants to spend money. Yes we still treat ourselves to little pleasures - we try to enjoy our life. But we also know that there are things we want out of life and the only way to get them is to save, save, save!!! So we live for our future!

Moving away from the money situation...
Do you Tan or are you afraid of wrinkles? Do you wait for MR. Right/Mrs. Right or allow yourself to love each person at the moment your in?
I see so many people put off happiness for "something better" ....
i think those people are afraid to live in the moment ya know?

Re: Do you live for the future or for the day?
i Definately believe in the saying that "Life is what happens when you're out making other plans". I mean, take wedding planning, for example. Even as laid back as we were about it, it consumed our lives, and we had to try to put in that extra effort into enjoying EACH other, and not lose sight of Why we were planning. having goals is a great thing, but sometimes we can go to extremes, and when you're staring too hard down the line, you can miss whats right in front of you. i dont think, as adults, that we can be completely dismissive of the fact that there is a future, and we do need to prepare for it, but at the same time, you really do have to stop and smell the roses, b/c if you just keep looking towards tomorrow, you're gonna have a whole lot of empty yesterdays.

I COMPLETELY AGREE!!!!!
I am a little bit of both... I know I need to save for my future endeavors but I am not going to "live" completely for the future.. I want to enjoy life now. If I want to go and get that haircut and highlight because it makes me feel good and I like doing it, I am going to do it.

Can I say that we do both? We save for a lot of things but at the same time if/when there are things that we reallly want (within reason), we go for it.

Thats exactly how i feel!
Red- i definately agree that its all about moderation, But i think that most people tend to be extremists, and can go overboard in either direction (though whatever brings each their happiness is really all that matters in the end)... oh, and Yes, my earlier response was Chock full O' Cliches but i definately believe in all of them

True...and we tend to be more savers than spenders. We are going on a vacation in Nov. and i was worried about spending the money. But my DH said we need to enjoy things while we are spending. So we are going.
BUT IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY where i heard that qoute from! Sex and the City i think
