Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I was thinking of getting an SUV but gas prices are sky rocket. I can't imagine paying $120 to fill up.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

How about a hybrid or a hatchback-4 door or a station wagon (now called crossovers)? There are some fuel efficient SUVs, just not the monstrously sized ones...

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Nope. We actually just got a new car, we got a Jetta - a regular sedan. When we were looking we made sure the back seat was spacious enough for two car seats and the trunk very roomy. No reason IMO to have a SUV/Van unless you have 3+ kids.

ETA: Our last car was a Toyota Matrix - a hatchback wagon and the Jetta actually has more trunk space.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

We already had a small SUV but having a child would not have been cause enough to buy a bigger car. People have been getting along rather well way before minivans and SUV's came along.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I want to but I don't know if it will happen. If it does, it will not be until after the baby is born. I have a 2004 Honda Accord Coupe & the thought of struggling to get the infant seat in & out of the back seat is the main reason I want to upgrade. Otherwise I would just keep my car. I am looking into the Honda CRV or the Nissan Rouge. Both are small SUV's and the gas should not be too much more than my Accord. If I do upgrade it will be in Feb or Mar 2009.

We will be getting a hybrid SUV, not a monster truck but something bigger than my focus. The reason, is when we moved here we left DH's car in NY so when he travels he will have transportation. So we only have one car here in NC and it sucks.

Exactly! My parents always had a sedan with two kids, and my IL's had one with three kids!! I think as a society we buy too much into the "family" aspect of an SUV that is pushed down our throats by the car manufacturers. SUV's were actually around for a long time before they became family cars - they were for off-roading and those kinds of activities - Sport Utility!

We looked at the smaller SUVs and the crossovers, and honestly, besides being a little higher up , there is no difference in space between those and a sedan. In fact, the space in the back is less- you have to stack stuff up and comprimise your rear view to maximize the space in the trunk.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I just went from my Audi A4 to a Honda Pilot...best move ever for me!!! No more cramping myself into the back to get DS in his car seat. This is so much easier for me. And I don't drive a lot (train station during the week, so really just on weekends) so the gas increase isn't too bad.

ETA: I upgraded because DS#2 is coming next week. There was no way it would work in the Audi.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I don't see a reason to get a larger car for my first child, but if we have a few more, it will make sense to get something bigger. We have a small SUV now and a regular car.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

If I had a 4 door car, I would not be interested in getting a bigger car. But I do not like the idea of dealing with a 2 door car with a baby. If I don't get a small SUV I will atleast get a 4 door car.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Yes, we have to and are kind of in a bind. We currently have an Altima and a Passat, fine for 2 kids, not for 3. We can't fit 3 carseats across the back. My oldest will be 3.5 so she still needs a full size carseat. We just assumed that Nissan would let us out of our lease if we leased a bigger Nissan. They told us no then yes they would let us out for $4K.

Back when we were kids it was doable with a sedan and 3 kids there were less restrictions. By 3 we probably weren't even in carseats.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Nah, I don't think it's necessary - my parents had 7 kids and the largest car they ever had was a station wagon. They also had a compact car, the station wagon was only used if everyone was going out together. Granted the seat belt laws were different then, but stilll I can fit 2 car seats and a child in the back of my sedan and the trunk is large enough to carry all of the gear for my step-sons baseball games, plus coolers and chairs....

We are but only b/c we now have to fit two large baby seats into one vehichle. We were in the market for a new truck anyway, so now we are looking at trucks with a 3rd row instead of just 2.

No because I already have a larger SUV. I would like to trade it in for a mini van but I don't want a car payment so that's not happening any time soon.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

2 years ago I bought my Mazda Tribute (compact SUV)
I was planning on having kids at one point and figured I’d start on paying off an SUV while I still could.

By the way I NEVER pay more than $60 to fill my truck (even with today’s prices)
And I NEVER fill my truck up more than maybe (MAYBE) twice a month
I love the mileage I get and the fact that we manage our gas consumption very well (always have)

I could not imagine adding a car payment right now.. I think I’d die.
Before I got preggo I wanted to work down on my debt and so adding a car would have killed us. We have made a lot of progress in the 7 short months I’ve had to get my act together.

I could not justify a new car/truck knowing my kid would puke up cheeze-it chucks and god knows what else in there within the next 5 years. Thanks, but no thanks. I appreciate and feel very good about purchasing a gently used SUV that had a clean car fax and dealer maintenance record. I take pride in the fact we take VERY good care of our vehicles. There’s no need to buy a new car (for us).

By the time I pay off this truck my kid will be old enough to be less of a mess and also I have SOOOOOOOOOO gotten my money’s worth of out of it already and it’s all gravy now. It should be paid off Dec 2010 (Xmas gift to myself!)
