People have been getting along rather well way before minivans and SUV's came along.

Because they had station wagons! Chat Icon

I'm one of four kids so it was a necessity. We have a small SUV (Jeep Liberty) and when it's time to change cars we'll probably do a large sedan. This car is smaller than the sport coupe I had before!

It cost about $70 to fill it with gas.

We already had a small SUV but having a child would not have been cause enough to buy a bigger car. People have been getting along rather well way before minivans and SUV's came along.

You are right, however I will tell you that with the size of strollers compared to back then ,and the size of carseats it is really tough to have a "car" for more than one child if they are both still in infant and converter seats. My stroller does not even fit in the back of my MILs car.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Cars of today are a bit smaller than the sedans of yester-year, I'll admit that. However, ever try to fold a PRAM the way you can fold a travel system? Not an easy task. My mom did it with an infant and three other kids. Good thing they were older and could help her lift.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

We did last year when we were ready to TTC. We got a 2007 Toyota RAV4 Limited V6 because I really wanted a truck for the space and my DH wanted something that was reliable and good on gas. For an SUV the gas mileage is great (19/26) and it costs about $50-55 to fill up. (87 octane) I drove with it from Stony Brook to Queens every day and was happy with the mileage. Anyway, I'm happy to have the extra cargo space once the baby arrives. For me, it will be easier to fit the stroller, groceries, etc. etc. into my truck than a car. But I agree with everyone, it's a hard choice to make given the current gas prices but if you do want a SUV there are some affordable choices out there that do get decent mileage too!! Chat Icon

We were going to get an Oddessy but now I am thinking we are going to keep my Accord. It will fit two car seats comfortably.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I think I am going to upgrade, but only because my car is not the safest model out there. I have a bare bones 2005 Honda Civic. DH really wants me to have a car with front/rear side curtain airbags, running lights and ABS. I still have payments left on the civic so the $$ won't bother me as much as the gas $$. I REALLY want to make sure whatever I get is fuel efficient AND small enough to squeeze into the small parking spaces in Park Slope.

With our second on the way, DH wants to. I want to hang on to the car until it's time to get another one. I think I can survive without a bigger car for a while.

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

We might have to. Since DH and I both work in Manhattan, we only kept my Toyota solara (that my parents bought me when I was in college) and sold his Acura shortly after we moved into our house.

We are thinking to get a Nissan Murano, but seriously I am so not looking forward to making car payments, and the mortgage, and our student loan, all with a new baby expenses....

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Dh has a brand new Audi A4, he is keeping his car. I have a 99 Grand Vitara(SUV) and I am getting a newer car.. its time. I am going for the Honda Element, it's stain resistant/scratch resistant and plenty of room. The baby can throw up in in or drop food in it and I can hose out the inside....lol

My DH owns a few car dealerships, so I can drive whatever, whenever. Right now I am in Mitsubishi Endevour, but I am pushing to get an Infiniti FX35. He wants me in a range rover, but I think that is completely unnessesaryChat Icon

I have a 4 door Honda Civic and DH has a mini van so we're all set. Thankfully DH recently got transferred and takes the train to work now. Gas prices are ridiculous!! Chat Icon

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

I just bought a bigger car this past weekend Chat Icon I knew I would need something bigger with the baby coming -- especially not having 4 doors would have been miserable!

I got a "fam jet" which I think sounds better than station wagon Chat Icon

This car takes about $10 more to fill up than my small car Chat Icon

Edit: Sorry for the bad picture of me... I had just thrown up in the bushes Chat Icon I love m/s!!

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

while growing up, my family never had a large car/station wagon / van. we always had mid-sized cars and never had a problem with space.

So, when I bought a new car in early 2007 (knowing I was going to TTC soon) I just made sure I had a family-friendly mid-sized car....

I got a prius. great fuel economy, and a fold down split seat for those days you really have to haul stuff, yet need a baby seat in the back. It's also great for driving around the grandparents... good leg room back there.....

mmmm, the miricle of the hatch back sedan..... our stroller fit in our car when it was even still in the box! not to mention we bought it before going to a party, so my mom was also there, and there were gifts and cakes in the car.

I will say traditional trunks (mom has one) are much harder to work with.....

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Well, originally we weren't going to eventhough DH's car is a bottom of the line Hyundai accent (manual e/t). But, his AC just went and it's $700 to repair (car's only worth maybe $2000 and has over 125,000 miles) so I'm going to get a more family friendly car and he'll take my old car. But we're not going to look until March and we'll get maybe a civic or accord. There's no need for us to rush out and get a new car right now. The baby can travel around fine in my focus for a few months! Chat Icon

Re: Do you plan to buy a bigger car?

Just to add, we did buy a bigger car after DD came. She was born in July and I had a Accord Coupe, 8 years old. It was ok for a bit, getting the carseat carrier out wasn't too bad, but its so much easier now that we have a bigger car. We got a Saturn SUV in Oct.
