really paranoid here!
I shut down my laptop AND unplug it.... I'm afraid of super bad powersurges that could breach the surge protector 
I also back-up my computer on 2 seperate external harddrives 
Always on, at work and at home. At work, it takes way too long to start up, and get all of my applications up and running. At home, I often just pass by the computer and check something real quick, so I save a lot of time by having it always on.
ONLY 2 external harddrives? I have all my photos on my internal HD at home, and external HD at home, my laptop, my internal HD at work, an external HD at work, plus an off-site website.

Leave it on through out the day, but shut it off at night.

My laptop is always running... I'm hoping that the insomnia will end w/i the next couple of months, and I'll actually be able to give it a break!

I have a laptop not a desktop, and I leave it on when I am home. I shut it down when I am not home because it wastes too much energy, it does run hot, and I have heard about laptop batteries going on fire. There was something on the news about it with Dell laptops a few years ago. I do have a Dell, but IMO it can happen with any laptop.
